Enter address into nav. system while driving?

Toyota does not allow you to enter addresses while moving. Unless you are interested in a bypass mod like listed below, the only way to enter the address is by Voice Command.

 

Toyota is not very consistent with this. My TNS 510 allows me to type in an address, and it is the same generation as the one in Prius gen. III!

 

You are correct. I should have said Toyota in the US. We obviously have more lawyers per capita than Europe !

 

Good theory, but the older nav. systems of Toyota in Europe like the ones in the first gen. Avensis and Yaris (the one which used the center screen) didn't allow you to change the destination while in motion.

And on the other hand of technical oddities we have my clock in the iQ which is set manually... and doesn't sync with the satnav/entertainment system!

 

Its not just the navigation system - Toyota has decided to be our mother for everything. While you are driving, you can not scroll the screen up and down in a folder if you are lucky enough to have a USB adapter in the center for a flash drive or hard disk. But go figure - you can go to the steering wheel and hit the track forward or backward button 100 times instead - now tell me how that is safer?

From what I can tell, Toyota's disabling of various functions on the display while driving is probably the most contested and angering item for Toyota and Lexus drivers (not just the Prius) - most of whom had no idea this would happen until after they purchased their cars.

 

By the way, I was always wondering, is there are commercially purchasable solution to do the speed bypass for those of us who are mechanically challenged who prefer not to tinker with anything but rather just have a kit that we can give to our local mechanic to install?

 

No matter how you look at it, you are gonna have to mess with the car in order to fake out the Nav System!
The good news, it's not that hard.
But it involves taking the dash apart to gain access to the back of the HU unit, and picking a certain wire, cutting it, and substituting a simple circuit in its place!
There is a prior post in this thread on how to assemble a 555 IC timer circuit that puts out a fair square wave. I have to assume that the Nav system looks at leading edge of the pulse generated from that circuit. Because in the scope shot it has a nice rise-time, but rapidly decays to ground. It seems to work OK however!

I am building the 555 system, but on a tiny PC Board to see if I can archive a much cleaner square wave.
I also am wondering if besides frequency of the square wave, what effect does pulse width variation have on the Nav System. I believe the circuit presented had an approx duty cycle of 50%.
I saw a scope trace photo of what the rotational sensors in the car produced, and they seemed asymmetrical to me, as well as a rather clean square wave! I have a good scope, just gotta tear the car apart again to stick the probe on the speed sensor lead and see what happens during a drive. Maybe with speed increase wider pulse width duration, and under 5 mph short duration, which would explain why the 555 quick rise-time circuit works!
I love battery powered scopes!
It would also be nice to incorporate a hidden source select switch so you can switch back to "Factory" mode if necessary!

No wire cutting. Plug and play. Just have to be willing to pull some of the dash apart so you can unbolt the nav and get to the back of it.

Navi override will be available in the Priuschat Shop before the new year. It will be the least expensive bypass on the market, unless you build one yourself. Price is not set yet but it will be less than $100 for the basic ON-OFF operation. An ON-OFF + 1 minute timed bypass version will be less than $150. I just need to build a demo, take a picture and come up with a description for Danny to put on the online shop. Parts are arriving daily and I still haven't gotten all the parts yet so I can't start building them yet.
