I didn't. Had to look it up. So I figured maybe some others didn't either.

I felt the original book, was a Childrens classic. On a par in creativity with any Childrens Classic you wanted to compare.

Unfortunately, I think JK Rowlings commitment to her original fans, and decision to age the characters realistically from a chronological POV, led to a deteriation of the entire series.

By the end? Ironically the whole series felt to me like a pale, tired, abused dragon that had clawed it's way out from the depths of Gringots...

Magic was no longer fun, it was weaponery. The kids...were young adults, and the adventures were no longer so much whimsical and fantastic as they were War Tales...

I'd still call myself a fan overall...I have read the entire series and seen every movie...BUT...I can't say I'm a commited 100% fan.

IMO 1st book...deserved greatness. Everything else...a slow deteriation to passable mediocrity, mixed with commercial viability.

Sorry to possibly put a dampener on your purchase but aren't the blu-rays zoned? I know that US dvd's don't work over here (UK) unless you pay extra for an unlocked multi-zone player. If they are no use to you I can give you an address you can send them too :)

Now, see, this is the reason there are entire bookstores. <G>

I very much enjoy both HP and LOTR because the author writes to the age he immediate audience is. The 'tone' of the Hobbit/LOTR is based on how old Christopher Tolkien is at the point it is written.

Harry 'kills' Dumbledore at the end of book one, Albus is being kept alive by the sorcerer's stone, which he destroys, but as it never occurs to Harry, you might miss it. As Harry's point of view become more adult, he sees more of what concerns the adults have. Albus is at war with Voldemort is a very similar way to Gandalf's 1500 year war against Sauron. Harry does not see it as all related at first, he sees separate adventures, but Albus sees one continuous war.

Thanks for that review. As I've never read the books, and have only seen snippets of the movies, it's good to know I am not missing much.

I would have read the books by now, but I was angered at Rowlings's refusal to allow them to be sold as ebooks. I have nothing against people who would rather read on paper. But people who would deny me the right to read a book except on paper are wackaloons. My arthritis and my eyes make paper books increasingly harder to read.

Now that I have an idea that the books are not so great, I don't mind their unavailability on a medium I can read.

So, back to my book. I'm re-reading Moby Dick. Last time I read it I had not yet been in close proximity to dolphins (which are, after all, small whales). I am finding myself far less sympathetic towards the crew of the Pequod than I was last time. Knowing the ending makes it more tolerable.

P.S. I read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings back in the 60's. I loved the books. I've never watched the movies. From what I've read, and the snippets I've seen, and just knowing how Hollywood works, and the fact of the books being long and movies short, I know I'd be sorely disappointed in the movies. You can't really preserve a great book in a movie. You can't even do justice to a reasonably good book in a movie. You can (sometimes) make a good movie from a comic book. A comic book is short enough on substance that there's not much damage you can do to the original. And I never read that sort of comic books anyway.

I thought Albus was a bad man though. Didn't you read Skeeter? ;)

BTW can you explain why the sorcerer's stone is keeping Albus alive. I forget.

^Oh man, I completely forgot about Flamel! It's been literally over 10 years since I read Book 1 and a few years since I last saw the movie. Now I'm even more excited to revisit it on Blu Ray! :D

i understand what you are saying, and might agree with you if my kids were not at the perfect ages when the series started. so they got to grow up with the characters and i got to follow along. i don't feel that there was any deterioration to the story and am actually amazed at the level of detail and connection she maintained throughout the series. it really is a brilliant one of a kind. that being said, the darkness it takes on as each book goes by can be disturbing to children and my nephew is only allowed to read one book a year which has to be extremely frustrating! even i cringed at the opening scene of the seventh movie. it was chilling in the book and much worse on the big screen.

I started reading Harry Potter 10 years ago when I was in 7th grade. Unfortunately, around my freshman year of high school I lost interest (2002), so I didn't read the 5th, 6th, and 7th book. I'd seen some of the movies in passing, but usually only in bits and pieces.

Fast forward to summer 2011. ABC was playing the old movies so I got a chance to re-watch them. It brought me back. I realized the glory days of the franchise would be behind us soon and that I had squandered 10 years worth of HP! I wanted to rectify the situation: I rented all the movies from the library (1-6). I watched one every night, after work. Then I picked up Deathly Hallows (the book) from the library and finished reading it in a couple of days (the last 100 pages were the best Harry Potter I've ever read). Then I downloaded DH Part 1 on iTunes. A week later, I went w/ 2 friends to watch Deathly Hallows Part 2 on the big screen. It was one of the last screenings at the end of the summer.

I'm really excited about owning the films now and watching the movies straight through on Blu Ray in picture perfect quality.

I hope you mean one Harry Potter book per year, not one book of any type. Either way, that's cruel and will only hamper his learning. If we hadn't already read them all, I'd be challenging my kids to read the entire series in a week. :)
