Car Seats

    Does anyone have real life experience of using car seats in the Prius V? We are down to either getting a Sienna or the Prius V (our preference). I want to know how functional the vehicle is with two car seats. I have a Gen II prius and the car seats do limit how far back the front seats can be positioned. To a lesser extent this is even the case in my Jeep Grand Cherokee. Anyway, I'd love to get feedback on car seat experiences in the V.

    I have a Britax Boulevard 70 installed rear facing in the back. With the rear seat slid all the way back, I can slide the front seat all the way back and not have it touch the carseat. I can even recline the front seat a notch or two. There is a crazy amount if room back there considering the outside dimensions of this car!

    Thanks. That makes me feel better. I talked to a dealer in Madison today and he said a customer is using two booster seats and an infant seat. Evidently they have plenty of room.

    I always say get the right tool for the job. If they are infants, it's much easier for one parent to be able to attend to them (especially infant rear facing seats) in a van. Later on, the DVD/headphone system is a godsend for anything longer than across town (and sometimes even then!). Having said that, those systems are much cheaper and more widely available today so you might be able to install one in the v if you're so inclined. The seat height of a van is made so you don't bend to put a car seat in (more important than you might think) and the sliding doors will keep older kids from dinging innocent cars.

    I would take both seats down to the dealership, install, and test drive both. It's a big purchase.

    I have not seen the Prius V yet, but in general, rear-facing seats will take less legroom from the front when installed in the center so the back of the carseat fits between the front seat backs. So, if you have just one rear-facing seat, you can usually find a way. I expect the Prius V gives more legroom than the standard Prius, so it should be even easier.

    What kind of carseats do you have?

    My wife is driving our Prius V on its first 1000 mile trip and she is impressed with the comfort of the new Prius V Wagon Seats. The front and back seats are a lot more comfortable than our 2008 Prius.

    We did test drive the Prius v with the car seat and it does seem adequate. We are down to the Sienna and the v. It seems like the Sienna wins on most of the major attributes, with of course the price and MPG's being the biggest weaknesses.
