Success - Polk DB651s in Factory Enclosure

    Dear wife says dinette wainscoting takes precedence :eek:

    In the meantime I've wandered off the reservation and (fronts only) am currently considering bypassing the dash units altogether, installing MB Quart PVL 269, 6 X 9 components, with tweeters half way up the doors.

    Back to this thread... great write up... as always! Particularly like your tabs solution for attaching the Polks to the OEM adapters! I was thinking double-sided foam tape... but the assy is already too thick....

    howdy, sorry for the very late and probably unhelpful response, but...

    using an electronic multimeter, i made sure i had the positive and negative probes plugged in properly, then touched the probes to the wires while the head unit was playing. i decided that i had negative polarity when i got a negative symbol on the multimeter and positive polarity when i did not. i rarely have any idea what i'm talking about or doing (when i start), but it seemed to be overwhelming evidence that the white wire was positive and the red wire was negative. i tried the wires both ways with the speaker and couldn't hear any difference (but of course i'll claim nearly complete deafness if pressed). sounds like it doesn't matter now that you have it all buttoned back up, but it's cool that you found and posted the wiring diagram!

    no, sorry, no progress. my wife took possession of my prius shortly after she test-drove it, and it's hard for me to get a window when i can booger it up with various mods. very crafty, that one.

    yow! bummer! it wouldn't be something as minor as the extra quarter inch of height on the reassembly, would it? I noticed a significant difference from factory to polk. although, now that you mention the volume thing, i can never get enough and have been thinking about an amp.

    Yeah, I mainly focused on the volume when I mentioned "minimal improvement" but the sound overall quality was an improvement, clear highs and tight bass.

    I think your right about the amp... I am positive that would help a great deal (assuming about 30-50/ch RMS amp).

    Ahhh... great to hear you had a quality improvement.

    But where are you guys gonna' mount an amp?

    - Behind the dash. Hard to get at if you wanna' retune it....

    - Under the seat? That'll require some extra wiring... might as well replace the OEM speaker wires while you're at it?

    The latter is my choice... I'll "need" to fiddle with it afterwards.

    there's a ton of space behind the door panel if you remove those foam blocks ;)

    "A turkey in every pot, an amp in every door," eh? Plus, the front doors are already wired for 12v ;)

    But point well taken; there's lotsa' space "in" those foam blocks.

    Do you think you could have gotten the 651 regular to fit instead of the slim version? Also, front the front seat, did you notice any real difference in sound, or only from the back?

    You know the amplifier put out AC voltage, right? There is no way to determine polarity with a multimeter.
    If you had an oscilloscope and you could compare the waveform going in and the waveform going out, you could determine polarity. Failing that, I think the best thing to do is to trust the wiring diagram. I suppose you could also check the other channel outputs and compare them with an oscilloscope. That way, you would at least know your front and rear channels had the same polarity, though you would not know they matched the inputs. The short form is, a multimeter is useless to test polarity of AC signals at audio frequencies.
