Is there a place to buy a cubby subwoofer/enclosure?

Yeah wow, either that is an old model or something else. That is the e-bay one I was talking about. Got it for $157. Hooked it up to the amp and the coil seems just fine.

Say, does anyone recall if Tim ever measured the volume of his enclosure? I am wondering if there is enough volume to go reflex with a tube? Probably not.

Tim's PM response to my same question, which also addressed factory carpet mat and hatch door clearance with the HGR grill.

"The flap of the cargo map is simple folded under. The volume of just the back of the enclosure, before I added the face, was 15 liters. So, probably close to 16 liters with the face.

The setup I made for the one pictured has 2.75" of clearance form the cargo door. This was to allow for the massive Hertz grill.

Once Inseek gets it installed, we'll know how well we did."

Well if that is the case, I could probably get away with adding the port and increase frequency range. This is kind of fun. :)
I wonder if the shape(radical as oppose to square/rectangle) of the box has have any impact?

Stay away from Bondo and 3M resin (same manufacturer). I buy it from Mertons - get "no-wax" laminating resin, and see if he'll sell you about 10-12 feet of 3/4 ounce chopped strand mat from a roll. You'll have extra, but it's better than not enough.

We're probably a little shy on volume, but some batting might bring it up to just enough. However, I don't think we have room for a proper sized port. I think it's about .5 cubic feet.

Remember, it's just not the diameter of the port, but the length, as well.

Just my opinion, but porting here "may" be a mistake.

Thanks for the input. The Hertz manual indicates 15.15 (response to 40Hz) to 20.64 liter (38Hz) with a 66 mm tube at 240mm and 250mm in length (respectively). I haven't measured the depth to see if there is room. The gain from the tube is 10-12 Hz.

    What do you think?

If it doesn't work out, send me the enclosure and I can seal it back up if you run into trouble

lol, if it was cheap to send things out of here I probably would have bought one from you. It cost $57 to ship that speaker up here from LA!

I was thinking the same... if it doesn't work out, I can always plug the hole.

Given that, depending on what I use for the front and the thickness of the sides, I might just have enough length at the deepest part (10.5" from the front of the face). I wonder if the tube needs to be perpendicular to the face/speaker?

    So much engineering to consider...

From what I understand of ports, no. I've even seen ports that run outside the enclosure, but I can't comment on the effectiveness.

I forget the shipping was so high. Just making the offer.

Oh I appreciate it... in fact I would not attempt this project without all your input, thank you. Getting stuff up here is only going to get more expensive and USPS finds ways to cut costs.

I know a fiberglass guy in Ketchikan, AK - I'll ask where he gets his stuff.

I'd say avoid the port idea. On an enclosure this small, designed for a small enclosure woofer, sealed will give much better frequency response. A ported (or "tuned") enclosure has the port tuned to a specific frequency...the result is a lot of output (or gain) at that specific frequency, but then very steep rolloff of all other frequencies above & below the port tuning frequency. If you love techno with a lot of info at 40Hz, and you tune your port to 40Hz, you'll be happy, but you'll be disappointed for just about everything else.

Thanks Geo, that is good information. I really don't I have enough room as it is, it would be totally marginal as best.

Here's what my guy in AK said...

Fiberlay in Seattle. He has to have a business license or the prices are really high. I'm sure there is at least one big supplier wherever he is, or at least in his region. Freight up here sucks from anywhere, but if you're near a city it's not bad.

Tim, we do have Home Depot, Lowes and other places like that here in Anchorage. Sure they sell decent products, yes?

I will probably start this weekend as the temps are little warmer. Did you add anything to the blue tape before you laid the resin? How hard was it pulling the shell out?

    Thanks!

the big box store stuff is probably 3m (Bondo) and is really thick to work with. Not optimal, but you can give it a try. I would try a local NAPA or independent parts store.

I didn't treat the tape, and it really stuck. You can wipe it lightly with some cooking spray or silicon.

? Have you started making one for your GII?

So how did you prep the area? With tape?

    Pictures please.
