Today's Daily Review (Oakland area) had a Reader Opinion complaining about excessive Prius v advertising, 15 times during GB-Detroit football game. He complained the larger cargo area reeks of excess and is not environmentally friendly. So, I responded.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

This is in response to the reader opinion article of excessive advertising of the Toyota Prius v during the Detroit-Green Bay footbal game.

I see the Prius v as a viable alternative to the top 5 selling sedans in the US which can all carry five adults and have large trunks. The regular Prius doesn't accomodate five adults very well. But, Prius v can carry 5 adults easily and has 85 pounds more load capacity to match the top five sedans.

The trouble is the top sedans typically average about 28 MPG and 24 MPG city. With Prius v, drivers can migrate from 28 MPG sedans to 42 average and 44 city MPG. In regards to environmental concerns, full hybrids cost somewhat more to produce, but the majority of production and lifetime energy usage is in the burning of the gasoline. And, I am all for American car companies to basically copy the Prius(es). The Camry, Accord, Fusion, etc, are essentially copies of each other.

Wow! Someone cares about what is on TV way too much.

Thanksgiving marred by message of excess
“Was I the only one paying attention to the commercials on Thanksgiving? During the Green Bay-Detroit game, we were subjected to the same Toyota Prius commercial no fewer than 15 times.
While I commend Toyota on being the industry leader in hybrid vehicles, there was something very troubling with the commercial for the new extended Prius.
After showing us how valuable the extended trunk is because of all the extra stuff it can hold, Toyota makes sure to let us know that the vehicle is still a hybrid, still gets great gas millage and will help you do right by the environment.
What is the lesson I learned? Feel free to buy in excess because your car can hold it in while still being environmentally friendly. Really? So I can help the environment by buying extra stuff simply because my vehicle can hold it? What about all the source materials, pollution from production, labor, packaging and shipment of those goods before the consumer even sees them at a store?
Don't try to sell me an environmentally friendly car by displaying the excesses it can hold.

Thanks for digging the original rant up, it was pretty entertaining to read! The gesture people do where they wave their hand over their heads in response to someone who completely missed the point of something would apply here beautifully. Wonder how he would have replied if the trunk was loaded with bags and bags of soda cans ready to be recycled... :D

Worse was the way I had to watch My Detroit Lions beat themselves in that game. I hardly noticed the commercials!

Yay, they printed my rebuttal in today's bayareanewsgroup.com :)

What's cool is the editor put in a title 'U.S. automakers should take note of the Prius'. Props for that.

We battled back against the naysayer(s) :) 'We' because of all the knowledgable people here :)

Said Prius v has 85 more lbs load capacity over Prius, it's 90 lbs more. No big.

    Thanks, Brett.

Unfortunately the crackhead didn't think about the reduction in consumption and waste when people driving gas guzzling SUVs switch to the new Prius v because it is now an option.

Sad but true. Hopefully it's not partly jealousy from him. He sure put things in a twisted light.
I was pleased to see the editor add title 'US automakers .... take note..'

Then what about the Nissan Quest commercial with the shopping mom with a cart full of STUFF that flew up in the air yet somehow found themselves all neatly stacked in the rear hatch?

But more seriously, I'm just glad that Green Bay beat the Giants last Sunday, thus preserving a one game lead for the Cowboys in spite of their bone headed coach.

So the guy stuffed his face, then sat in front of a TV watching other people exercise for hours, and can complain about anything not being environmental?

When I told my son in SF that we bought one he freaked out! He's is a Porsche enthusiast and has always pushed us to get one. He ranted about how ALL Prius owners in CA are just advertising how "Birkenstock" they are and environmentally conscious etc. That it's a "status thing". Heh- heh. I'm a former Californian too, and feel it's just a pretty car, practical, comfy and serves our needs as grandparents. Son works from home and drives little but think he just feels a guilty owning a guzzling M3 and 911. Now after seeing ours he's understanding why we bought... he says he's even thinking about buying wife one. :)

Boys and Girls, you missed the point, the clod either was incapable or incapacitated in some way as to NOT be able to use the remote control and either A, Hit Mute, or B, switch to the other game for 2 minutes..... then to be dumb enough to rant about the experience he had to endure. Sounds like just another technology challenged dolt!

More than that. It was a rant about the excessive airing of the commercial and he took a big shot at the new Prius v.

He said 'don't try to sell me an environmentally friendly vehicle by displaying all the excess it can hold'.

Truth is, if he had seen 10 commericials for an environmentally un-friendly SUV and all the excess it can hold, he wouldn't have said a peep.

There is envy behind any rant like this. If it was 'Prius v like car' from Ford or GM, he wouldn't have said a thing.

Got a good volley back at him ' US automakers should take note of the Prius'.
