    Let's just drop all the "horrible quitet car" dialog. Go to youtube and and you can watch people walking RIGHT INTO oncoming trains that send their bodies flying. "oh MY! ... let's ban trains! ... or make their horns even louder!". NO. If you can't hear a train coming ... much less feal the rumble of the ground under your feet - then you have to realize there will always be inatentive people who'll run in front of the biggest noise making - ground shaking thing you can imagine.

    Don't forget the lady that fell into the mall fountain this year. I think we need to ban those, too, because obviously an unmoving, silent object poses a hazard to us.

    I do not feel bad for people's inattention getting them into these situations. When I walk across a parking lot, street, etc, I'm constantly observing my surroundings.

    or the girl that stepped off an airplane and walked into the moving propeller. Don't get me wrong, I feel terrible for the poor girl and hope she makes a speedy recovery but seriously... how do you not see, feel, or hear an airplane propeller right in front of you?

    Come on? That's not fair. Just because inattentive people have accidently walked into "louder" things like planes and trains...really is no justification or arguement for whether it is safer for electric cars to be as quiet as possible or safer if they have additions like Toyota's VPNS.

    Whether anyone likes it or not, I think Toyota's VPNS or noisemakers are simply part of the future.

    And even though I think Prius owners have enjoyed the potential quietness of their vehicles. If you are being honest? A vehicle that makes a higher audible level of noise, is more often going to be noticed quicker and sooner than that same vehicle making less noise.

    The fact that you can go to Youtube and find tragedies where people have not noticed LOUD things, really doesn't change this overall reality.

    Actually, this demonstrates why 'hot loading' of a propeller driven aircraft in an uncontrolled environment can be very hazardous, unless it's for example a twin with only one engine running on the other side of the passenger door. Many operators and FBOs specifically prohibit hot loading.

    I know, it seems difficult to believe, but in that case I suspect that the airport environment might have overloaded her senses, the prop is spinning fast and isn't clearly visible, and the worst happened.

    As far as the Prius noisemaker, I tend to favor somewhat more limited intervention when it comes to this sort of safety device.

    As far as walking into the path of a train, perhaps some of these folks were suicidal, and it was intentional...?

    Now there is a real American solution to the problem. I like it. Walking should be at least a misdemeanor. On the third offense it could be a felony.

    Walking also takes up space that could be used for more roads, so there is a hidden expense to it.

    More like;

    Step 1: Listen to ipod or talk on phone
    Step 2: Walk straight out into road
    Step 3: Look shocked when car blasts horn
    Step 4: Gesticulate vigorously at one of those damn hybrids for sneaking up on you
