I wouldn't call the Prius 17" wheels "spokes." They're more like fan blades to me.

If you want OEM looking rims then 17" Prius wheels are fine, but if you only care that your rims are 5-spoke then I suggest you look at aftermarket rims. The CT looks hot w/ rims.

Ditto with going OEM. During my search for wheels, for some reason, people selling prius wheels tend to ask a lot more $$ for their wheels. I guess they're in high demand?

One down side of going with CT200H 17" wheel is its weight... it weighs 24.6lbs each and 17" tire will be considerably heavier than 195/65/15 tire.

Overall, you are looking at ~15 extra weight / corner.

    Those look great :)

I currently have scion rims with 215/50/17 on my genII. from what i've heard, the genIII has room for 18's, which makes me curious how a 215/55/17 would look on a genIII.

I find that feedback (the bad kind) goes down with the taller tire. going wider was not an option for me. i tried it and found it hard to control at high speeds. (winds and road cuts)

These statements always crack me up. When you go to a bigger wheel you get a shorter tire so the overall diameter is the same with a 15", 16", 17" or 18" wheel but weight goes up on average as the wheel size gets bigger.

I had 16" Bridgestone RE-01s on my Prius and they were really grippy, but heavy too and killed mileage.

The Prius just isn't a performance car. I found that out the hard way.

supercharged.. what's your point? (what cracks you up?) i'm not referring to keeping it all matched to oem size or weight.

i'm saying increase the height to give it more cush and make the wheel wells look more filled by increasing actual tire height while having on larger wheels.

this is why i use 215/50/17 instead of 215/45/17... because to me, that extra 5% keeps it from looking stupid... (too thin)

I don't understand why people want larger/heavier wheels with extra unsprung weight on Prius. :)

The trade of between mpg/comfort and looks/handling is worth it to many of us. :D

    F8L, did you really lose 8 MPG with 17" wheels/tires? How heavy is your 17" wheel/tire? :)

I have light weight 17x7.5 BBS wheels/ 225/45/17 Michelin PS2 tires on my Subaru, and I didn't lose much MPG over 16" OEM set up.

I lost approx 6-7mpg depending on how I drive. If I utilize a lot of hypermiling techniques then it could be as much as 8 or 9mpg. If I just drive normally (just gliding when possible) it drops to a difference of 6-7mpg. The 15s glide so much better that it is easier to exploit hypermiling techniques more effectively.

With higher HP vehicles and ones that do not get great fuel economy the loss from upsizing is not so great. It's kinda like the mpg loss for the Prius in winter. The numbers appear large but the same percentage loss applied to a 20mpg vehicle looks smaller even though the actual fuel used is larger on the 20mpg vehicle.

So an 8mpg loss on the Prius looks like this:

    55mpg to 47mpg = 14.5% approx.

Apply that 14.5% loss to a 25mpg vehicle and it looks like this

    25mpg - 14.5% = 21.375mpg or 3.6mpg loss.

On the 3rd Gen Prius with its higher and broader torque curve the impact is reduced and I believe it would be the same for any other vehicle that is not HP challenged like the GenII. :D FWIW my wheel/tire combo is approx. 7lbs/ea heavier than the OEM wheels/tires. So I'm at about a 28-32lb increase in static weight over OEM. How this translates as unsprung weight is anyone's guess with the Prius.

If you do plus sizing correctly you keep the over all tire diameter the same. The larger the wheel size the shorter the sidewall of the tire. You said that the genII has 17" wheels but the genIII has room for 18" wheels. The genII can also fit 18" wheels, you just need the correct size tire. If you get a tire that is too tall for the car then mpg, acceleration & braking will all suffer.

Correct tire sizes for the Prius GenIII ....
    15" 195/65R15
    16" 205/55R16
    17" 205/50R17, 215/45R17, 225/45R17 will all work
    18" 225/40R18

So, after my car eventually gets finished in the body shop having the body kit installed, I'll have to install my coilovers and the new wheels, so I'll have to buy appropriate tires... Fledermaus said to get 225 45 18. You said that 225 40 18 are the correct tire sizes... So, what makes the 40 part "right"? I felt relieved when Fledermaus said the size, so that I didn't have to worry about figuring it out. Now I'm back to not knowing definitely anymore. So, could you explain why I should get the size you said and not the size that the manufacturer said? Thanks for your help!

Actually, a 225/40 18 is the closest to the stock height for a genIII prius. Stock 195/65 15 is 25.0" tall and a 225/40 18 is 25.1" tall.

Play with tire sizes & you will see that the 225/40R18 is the closest size to OEM. The 225/45R18 tire is too tall & will hurt MPG even more than the heavier wheels & tires. The 225/45 size is correct for a 17" wheel. :D
