I will be doing my first oil change on my '07. Does the prius use a crushwasher? What's the best place to get them. Use new one at each change?

I am pretty sure it does (can't remember off the top of my head). Get it from Toyota with the oil filter. It is recommended to replace it each time - but it is not crucial.

Yes it does. I think my local dealer sold it separate from the filter, IIRC. My most recent filter purchases have been from metrotpn.com, who includes the washer with their filters.

I now use a Fumoto Valve, but before I put that on I replaced the washer with each oil change.

Hey, that means I have washers I won't need. Highest bidder?? :)

If you run over road debri and break off that valve, you will have bigger issues to worry about than that washer.

No question. As I reported on GreenHybrid, that's a valid concern and something I considered before I bought it. But as I also mentioned there, I have heard of no reports of that ever happening among the many Prius owners that use one.

I looked around for crush washers figuring that anywhere would be cheaper than buying them from the local Toyota dealer. After looking around, I went to my local dealer and they wanted $0.92 per washer. I put down $10.00 and bought enough to last me more than a few years.

I've been re-using the same washer for over a year, and 30,000 miles. Not cheap, just too lazy (or forgetful) to get a new one. So far, no leaks.

I re-use crush washers at least a few years on all my vehicles and not one problem.

I stripped out a lug nut. I went to toyota for a new one, bought two to have a spare, and asked the guy for a couple of crush washers. He gave me a few. Free. So I changed out my original crush washer after 80,000 miles. Although it was not in mint condition, it had a lot more life left in it and I would have kept using it, but the new ones were free. As long as you don't over tighten, they should last a long time.

I have 96544 miles (as of today) on a 2005 pack #4 and change my own oil...have never replaced the washer, and it still doesn't leak.

$1 each at my dealer. I have no problem using a new one each time.

A buck for a washer? Ouch. I think I bought a handful of soft copper washers at one of the big box hardware stores for that a few years back, no problems so far.

I tend to reuse the washer a few times, with no ill effects, mainly because I have no idea where I put the pack of washers I bought about 9 oil changes ago.. :-(

Every time I clean my garage, I find the pack of washers, and then I put them away "somewhere safe", but of course, when oil change time rolls around, I've completely forgotten where it is that I've put the washers, so I end up re-using the old washer.. Once in a while, my garage cleaning schedule co-incides with an oil change and I know where my pack of washers is and I'll replace the washer with a new one, but unless the washer is completely mashed out of shape (which means you are probably overtorquing the plug and in danger of stripping the oil pan threads), it shouldn't be an issue to reuse the old one.

Apparently you also have no problem overpaying. :)

Do you realize that based on 5000 miles, the cost comes to .0002 per mile! How can you stand to pay for a new washer EVERY time? I'm not cheap, just too lazy to go get new ones.

That's right. The amount I'll spend on crush washers over the life of the car, even at $1 each is super trivial. Convenience counts.

Is that just the rubber gasket which is aka (crush washer)?

The crush washer is metal (aluminum maybe, definitely not rubber) with some plastic coating on both sides. Just go to your dealer's parts department and buy oil filter and the washer together. Or do it on-line where there should be a link from the filter to the washer.
