PPI preheat and battery use

    I just got done reading all the comments under the lead article on the home page on the PPI. However I still can not clearly find an answer to these 2 questions:

    1) Can we preheat the cabin while plugged in?? It looks like from the latest post we can do this but only if we have a 220V charger.

    2) can we preheat or precool with the base level (32000$) version or do we need the premium package (39000$) to do that.

    3) Can I save my EV miles for later?? ie if EV mode is NOT selected, will I use up my EV miles just by running in normal HV mode??

    No, there is no pre-heat function built into the 2012 PiP.

    You can pre-cool with the base version when plugged in but only from the fob, not from a smart-phone.

    Yes, you can select EV and HV mode.

    Thx for the response Paradox.



    Let's say I have the battery fully charged but I am not in EV mode. I leave home and have a 38 mile drive on the highway before I hit town (which is where I want to use EV mode). How much of the 4.4 kwh battery will be left when I hit town?? All?

    If you have a fully charged EV battery, start the car and go into hv mode, you'll still have the full EV range available whenever you choose to use it by going into EV mode.

    It is a 2500' elevation change on the 38 mile highway trip in normal HV mode (not EV mode) with some moderately steep grades. I would think if I did full throttle up the grade I might eat into some EV miles.

    AFAIK, the HV part of the battery is separate from the EV part thus it will not 'eat into' the EV portion. The EV portion will recharge from regenerative braking so consider that when coming down the 2500' elevation change; You could make up a bit of EV distance if you used a little before hitting the incline. It'll be something you'll have to 'play with' once you have the car.

    Same distance you have to have the fob now to arm/disarm the car... Sometimes range can be increased by placing the fob to your chin when pressing a button.

    Hmm good question on that. It was separate on the test fleet pre production but not sure about now in the final production version.

    another question:
    How is the battery cooled??

    I am fairly certain the EV and HV portions of the battery are separate in that the car will not use EV range while in HV mode.

    Fans cool the pack, similar to the current pack. There is no elaborate cooling system like that found in the Volt.

    How far is the distance on your current fob in the situation where the car would be plugged in and you would be trying to use the fob? In reality the range can vary by what's in between the fob and car which is why I'm not locking myself down by giving a set range.

    If your current fob in the 05' Prius arm/disarms the car at that range through the window it'll work to start the a/c when plugged in for pre-cooling. I've had mine work at great distances like a few hundred feet and other times it wouldn't make it maybe past 75 feet.

    I'm sorry to sound so clueless about using the fob that I have in my 2005 Prius. My wife drives that car now, and, I don't really remember having a need to use the fob when it was 'my car': I always locked/unlocked it by using the 3-door SKS. I've never had a need to use it from far away.

    Pre-cooling my new PiP from my inside my place of employment, though, would be really neat!

    This is still uncertain.
    Ken1784 reported in another thread that the production PiP has only one battery (4 modules in series).

    But even with that being the case, I'm sure if they wanted to program it (which is what I think they did) so EV range stays set and 'untapped' while in HV mode, they could do it. I wish I had more hands on time with the ones I drove in San Francisco in September......
