Re: Volk Racing CE28 Eco Drive Wheels for Prius Only!

So has anyone received shipment on these yet? I'm really torn.

I found a place in Arizona that has Traklites in 15" for $774 shipped to California. Half the price. I know that the Volks would last for this and the next pirius, but how is the durability of the Motegi's?

It's hard not seeing them in person. Does anyone know of a website that has alot of pictures?

    Thanks everyone,
    Eric

Re: Volk Racing CE28 Eco Drive Wheels for Prius Only!

I've had a set of Motegi Trak Lite wheels in 17" on my Scion xA for three years now. When selecting wheels, I chose them because they are forged construction like the Volk, but much less money. We have horrible roads around here, and I felt the extra strength would be necessary. There have been no major problems with the wheels; my only complaint is that the painted 'gunmetal' finish has developed some minor chips over the years. I expect this would be a problem with any painted wheel, though.

By the way, I really REALLY want a set of Ray's wheels for my prius, but not these - I wish they came in 17"! Tire selection is so much better in that size range.

You are right: Both the CE28 and the CE28N are available in 17", but that would preclude me from getting the 'hybrid only' version of the wheel. How could I be smug with an average gas-guzzling wheel? ;)

Unrelated question - do these price quotes include center caps? Usually Ray's wheels don't include them, and it's about $40 per wheel extra.

Re: Volk Racing CE28 Eco Drive Wheels for Prius Only!

I just got an email from Fuji Corp and it looks like the rims have gone up in price I would assume due to the low dollar value.

    15"--$1230/$1577

    16"--$1331/$1915

So after you add shipping into the mix (which I assume is about the same as the last quote ( let's say $350) You're up to $1700 for 16" rims just by themselves.

I am now leaning towards the Traklites. Here is my dilemna:

Choice #1--Traklite 1 gunmetal polished lip 15x6.5--Elite on ebay had them but I can't find them anywhere. They were $925 shipped.

Choice #2--Traklite2 in silver--15x7jj--What tire size am I looking at with the wider width? I would hope to go with the 195/60/15. Will this fit or do I have to go to a 205? I'd rather not take on the added weight. These are the least expensive at $775 and look most like the stock rims.

Choice #3--Traklite gunmetal polished lip 16"x6.5jj--This could totally work. I like the way the 16's look as they are more in proportion to the car, BUT what is the added average weight gain going up from a 15 to the 16" tire? Also is there much of a mpg loss due to the larger size? These are also the most expensive going for $1070 at elite.

    Thanks for the advice everyone.

I really like the the rims (especially the formula silver!!! ). Too bad they aren't fit the classic prius, or else I will buy a set for sure.

Re: Volk Racing CE28 Eco Drive Wheels for Prius Only!

Any time you increase the rim diameter you increase the weight. It's the rim weight mostly, though the tires -could- be heavier as well, though they would have a lower sidewall in a larger diameter. All this keeping the overall diameter "constant" of course.

Also, a 15" wheel/tire combo will ride better than a 16" wheel/tire combo, due to the sidewall being taller and therefore able to flex more. It gets even worse when you move to 17" and worse still at 18". If you put 18" "lightweight" wheels on a Prius expect a large fuel economy hit, as posted by at least five owners.

So far, max. economy on the Prius has been achieved with 15" wheels and "cheap" (read smallest possible to handle the load) tires inflated hard. It seems to be one of the engineering compromises we must make. Better traction equals lower mileage, though my Nokian WRs in stock 15" size didn't lower the mileage. In fact, they may have marginally improved it, as they didn't drop the mileage when new last fall. We'll see what the mileage is when/if ;) it gets to be "summer" here - currently it's snowing heavily for the forth day in a row.

Beware, if they list "hub rings" in the package, they are NOT Prius only.
Hub rings are there to adapt "universal" wheels to different size hubs. If they were Prius only, they would be machined to fit Prius hubs directly without "rings".

    These wheels are lovely.

I have a 2008 touring with the 16 inch wheels. I want to assemble a set of wheels and tires for next winter. I'd like a taller sidewall, so could I use a set of these in 15" for my winter tire? Thinking that the selection of 15" tires might be better.

Yes, you can use 15" wheels for your winter tires. Use the stock 15" tire size so you end up with an accurate speedo readout.

I have stock 16" wheels UK version probably the same as your touring version, I found 205 55 16 to be sweet though I have 205 50 16 as my summer tyres I much prefer the handling of the 55 profiles and they are a common size (cheeper). milage was better with 205 55 16 at the pumps too ( calculated and MFD), why I still cannot work out. Shame I have the nice original wheels with the recommended 205 50 16 tyres and the nice 205 55 16s on the rough set I got from ebay for winter.

Re: Volk Racing CE28 Eco Drive Wheels for Prius Only!

6.8kg would be 15lbs, I thought the stock 15x6 were 16.3lbs (link below)

previously Volk CE28 were only available in 7" for 16's and weighed 11.9 lbs.
    Racing Hart CP-035R 16x7 are 10.8 lbs

Among the lightest in 15" are Volk CE28N in 15x6.5 for 8.1 lbs.
Keeping the stock size 15x6 Racing Hart CP-035R are 7.9lbs
    but you can get 15x5.5 CE28N at 7.7lbs !

both Hart and Volk are tough solid track proven wheels, really the only ones commonly available that I would be wary of are Rota, that have been known to blow spokes.

I think it would be beneficial if we could nail down the stock 15x6 wheel weight

I have them. I didn't see any MPG gain, but then I put on some ultra-sticky tires (as opposed to LRR "eco" tires).

how much is the handling is improved or acceleration feel when this vs the stock rims? does the unsprung weight make that much of a difference?
