My husband and I are interested in buying the 2012 Prius v 5 model without the AT package. However they are at the top of our price range. My question to yall is what was your experience with price negotiations with the dealer? We are hoping to get one for under invoice price. What are y'alls thoughts and any advice is greatly appreciated as this will be our first experience buying a car from a dealer!

Try TrueCar.com. Toyota dealers seem to respect their invoice and market average prices. Print out a sheet showing this information and take it with you for negotiation. Notice their prices include the delivery fee and the region fee. Also, if the car on the lot comes with anything you don't want, tell them you don't want to pay for it. We got a $180 MSRP pinstripe removed from the final price, among other things we didn't want. Above all, never be afraid to sleep on it. The more times you leave and come back the next day, the lower the price. We gave them our final offer over the phone, that dropped the price by $500. Just keep track of the VINs from visit to visit. Finally, be sure to check over everything twice before signing; make sure everything you expected is included. Hope you get a great deal. Good hunting bgpriusgal!

I bought ours $100 over dealer INVOICE..Negotiate, negotiate and ask to see the dealer invoice or go to another dealership. If you consider coming to AZ, Go to Camelback Toyota in Phoenix and ask for Mo..He saved us a BUNCH!

Did you try what CharlieGulf suggested? I just did a 30 second search on truecar.com for the Bowling Green, KY area for a Prius v Five... $29,203 was what I got, which is about $100 below invoice.

31500 is likely sticker price, not invoice for a Prius v Five without AT

FWIW, from my post at http://priuschat.com/forums/dealers...ng-whats-good-price-2011-a-2.html#post1449730
The salesman in question was at Toyota Sunnyvale. I hadn't worked w/that salesman before as the person I bought my Prius from in 06 wasn't working the day my friend and I dropped by.

It depends on where you are geographically.
Any car broker between you and the dealer isn't doing their thing for free.
I sell to some very good brokers who facilitate the process for busy folks. In my opinion, that's the only reason to use a car broker anymore.
The one here in question is one I have worked with. That's all I have to say about that.

To be quite honest you can catch a good deal at almost any dealership. Each dealership will value a particular new car differently depending on supply and demand, factory incentives, and the cost of flooring or interest that the dealership has to pay once the vehicle has been on the lot over 30 days.

For example you could be looking for a red Prius IV with solar package and one dealership had it 500 over invoice. Another dealership has it -500 below invoice. Basically trying to get rid of it before they have to pay flooring and hoping they get you to finance and sell you one of their products to make money or to sell a vehicle to a person who lives in the PMA (primary market area).

If a car can be sold to someone cheap who lives in the PMA the car will be reallocated to the dealership, they have a chance to service your vehicle to make money, chance to gain a referral, a chance to sell you a finance product, and the real money the factory bonus money for making the quota setup by Toyota. Also the money in the surveys you send in.

I used to work in a corporate new car store, a franchised dealership, and a privately dealership. I have worked in sales, fleet, finance, and a office management.

To find the right deal you have to be at the right place at the right time if you are looking for the ultimate deal. To be quite honest if you are within 500-750 back of invoice you are getting a good deal. Plus factory incentives even better. And anything more beyond that is cherry.

After finding a great advertised price 200 miles away, I called local dealers and got one to bite. Car sold in 5 min and dealer, sales guy got paid. I guess they need to get paid :(

200 miles is nothing. You will burn less than half a tank of gas. You should negotiate a $50 gas card into your deal if you drive that far out.

$26,300 for a Prius V Trim Level 3 in Springfield, VA. Interesting enough that is $600 under TrueCar. My suspicion is TrueCar attempts to create the expectation that their pricing is the absolutely best so you shouldn't even ask for more. I great tool for the dealer to manage the customer's expectation. Note that $26,300 is about $400 more that Diana's pricing but the best I could get the DC area. I wish there had been an exclusive forum for Prices Paid in PriusChat
