There's nothing wrong with using cheap oil and cheap filters replaced at 7500 miles, but if you live in colder climates you want to go synthetic, especially with how often the prius engine starts and stops, its very important that you use a high capacity oil filter.

My father used to buy Mobil 1 Extended Performace which is designed for 15K miles, he'd than buy an oem filter which I don't even feel can go the recommended 7.5K miles, I explained to him that you are only as strong as your weakest link, and he now buys the expensive hi capacity filter, he buys the Mobil1 m1-103 ($12.49) but I use the Fram Extended Guard XG4967 ($8.49). He buys the Mobil 1 Extended Performance and goes 15K miles b/t oil changes, I buy Pennzoil Platinum and go 13K miles b/t oil changes.

M1 0W30 in mine. Last change was at 10k miles. But I usually change it at 5-6k miles. It only holds 3.5 qts so we are not talking about much $ here anyway.

I now drive the Prius only about 1,000 miles a year. My annual hiking trip to Canada, hauling recyclables to the depot a couple of times a year, parking at the airport when I travel.

So I have the oil changed at the dealership once a year, using whatever oil they use. At the rate I drive, this car is going to rust out before the engine wears out, even with regular oil.

My daily-use car has no motor oil to change. There should be an emoticon for :smug:

There's nothing wrong with the OEM filter. Its the filter Toyota recommends using on this motor. The engine in this car is probably the least stressed modern motor on any modern car ever built.

Why don't you FEEL the oem filter can't go 7.5K miles? Please give me more data than you feel. I understand your a big hi capacity filter fan but putting down the correct and really good filter to prove your point is not helping anyone who comes on this site looking for correct info for his car.

It's 92 cubic inch 70 horsepower motor that only runs about 80% of the time
and hold 3.5 quarts of oil. Its a tiny motor that hardly works at all. How stressed out do you think the oil filter is going to get in this motor?
    Its really a moot point.
