I realize this is somewhat offtopic for this forum, but can you post a spread picture and a cutoff picture for your E-55s? I have yet to see a good even spread with any of the Mercedes lines and the cutoffs are pretty yellow-ish with the fresnel lenses for my tastes.

    Perhaps something has changed....

will do.....my aiming is a bit off because of the JDM difference but you'll get idea.....will take some when I get off work

E55's don't provide as nice a cutoff as the TSX lenses but I didnt have much room to work with.

The prius lights can benefit from the 02-04 Q45 "gattling gun" projectors being that they are so big

The E55's are 3" projectors if memory serves. The FX, TSX, RX and many more are 2.5" so should fit if you have room for the 3" ones. Also the bixenon side-entry ones from the JDM Lexus IS series is a shallow 2.5" so it should work in just about anything.

More so than cutoff, I am also curious about the spread. E55's are (or at least were) notorious for hotspots and bleeding.

I didn't think the FX-Rs needed a lens swap since they come with clear lenses.

Just because they are clear doesn't mean they have anywhere near the optical properties of the TSX lenses or even the TSX-R lenses. Some places ship the replica FX-R with the replica TSX-R but most don't. If it didn't say they are TSX-R lenses, they probably aren't.

The TSX lenses are very "bubbly" with a deep inset on the inside which bends light much more than normal. Bent light makes the wavelengths go to the extremes, and with the TSX lenses this is blue/purple. But the focal of the lens is such that you can dither the cutoff from tight with a tight blue/purple band all the way to still sharp cutoff but with a large diffused couple inch band of blue/purple if you space it further away from the bowl (1-2mm on the RX-AFS bowls).

I would think TRS would offer a lens upgrade if it would improve the FX-R. I could be wrong though. :)

Bi-xenon: FX-R 1.1 - HID Projectors from The Retrofit Source Inc

    • 2x: FX-R Bi-xenon projectors (Low/High Beams)
    • 2x: Solenoid input pigtails
    • 2x: FX-R clear lenses (pre-installed lens upgrade)

Thanks for the link and the advice. :)

Today I received my TYC headlamp assemblies and I ordered new shrouds (E46-R extended) and new bulbs. I went with the Morimoto 5Five bulbs because I like the whiter light from the 5000K bulbs. I realize that the Phillips 85122+ bulbs would be brighter but I really dislike the yellowish color, especially when overdriven with a 55w ballast. The price on the 85122+ bulbs is ridiculous anyway. For the same price I got the 5Five bulbs AND the new shrouds.

I'll put the Morimoto Mini H1s (4.1 version) into the new TYC housings with the new shrouds and the XB35 bulbs then I'll likely post them for sale to recoup some of the money I've lost while destroying housings. I have a feeling the Minis will look better and produce equal output to the FX-Rs (not comparing the distance of the FX-Rs) but I can retro the Minis in a much cleaner way that is sufficient for resale. I'd never sell a hack job. lol

So if anyone is interested in the Minis I would likely sell them for around $450 complete with the XB35 bulbs, TYC headlamp assemblies, E46-R extended shrouds. All you would need is a set of 35w or 50w ballasts ($35-$45 from DDM). I would recommend the 50w-55w ballasts for extra lumens. The new projectors can handle the 55w ballasts due to the cooler temps of the XB35 bulbs. The bowls look brand new despite being ran in 100+ deg ambient temps.

Newbie here: I want to thank all the pioneers here in this thread that have done the trial and error research that the rest of us benefit from.

I read every single post on this long thread. I take delivery of my '08 Prius with standard halogen headlamps on Friday of this week and am about to order a kit from TRS.

To confirm I've understood all I've read and to keep my life simple with this planned modification:

I plan to order the H1 kit with Mini Gatling Gun shrouds and optional XB35 5000K bulbs.

Am I good to go with this selection?

Again, many thanks for the fine research captured in this thread.

    Cheers

    Mike

Yes. As well as some brand of ballast. I've been using the DDM ballasts and they seem to work well but occasionally one headlight or fog light will not turn on the first try.

Oh, please use silicone or some kind of adhesive when putting your shrouds on. This will reduce the risk of them popping off if you hit a hard bump. Mine came off twice. Grrrr

Silicon adhesive (the stuff in a tube like caulk) will get hot, turn gooey, and then droop down leaving goo strands.

Do adhere them, but I always suggest a combination of epoxy + jbweld. This is for the projectors, shrouds, everything. Use 1min/5min epoxy and get the thing in the right position. Then JBWeld the crap out of it. And real JBWeld, the stuff that comes in a 2 part mixture.

Newbie here, just got a 11' Prius 2 months ago. After reading this thread, I would like to get HID kit installed on my 11' Prius, do you have any info that might help?
