I think it is incorrect to assume that all cars had immobilizers as a part of the key for the past 10 years. I just sold an 03 Mazda that didn't have one and our 05 VW Passat doesn't.

My apologies for the over-exaggeration. I am however surprised that your 2005 VW doesn't have it, as my 2001 GTI, my wife's 2004 Jetta, her 2005.5 Jetta and my 2007 GTI did. A quick Google search makes me even more speculative.

Besides the point, the days of the $2.50 key are long gone.. and rightfully so.

On the outside of the car. I am not sure you can lock the car with the door open on SKS cars to avoid locking the key in the car.

You can lock an SKS car from the inside with door open, if the system detects the key in the car it won't lock when you close the door and the car beeps at you. If the system does not detect the key in the car it but the key is inside maybe out of range or shielded the car will lock.

Duckles go out to your car and try it if you are worried leave your window down.

This topic is going in circles. The question that started this thread was how do you open the door with gloves. The person was referring to the outside door sensors shown in this picture.

The ridge on the top locks the doors and the inside part of the handle unlocks the door. It uses capacitive sensing sensors. They detect the dielectric of the human body. When you have gloves on the sensors can not detect the human finger and the door does not lock or unlock.

The solution is to buy gloves that have a special coating on the finger tip with the same dielectric as the human body. Here is an example of one.

Wizgloves iPhone Gloves, Texting Gloves, Smartphone Gloves (Color Black, Size: S/M)

They can be used with devices like phones, security entry pads and car doors like the Prius. They come in many styles and colors.

Why try to lock it outside? It is cold out there!

If you lock it from inside, all the gloves, cold, Fob, issues disappear. (if you could not lock it from inside, why would Toyota put a lock button inside?)

So the title of the thread is wrong? It is really about unlocking the car?

Not at all. Most people with a Gen III Prius get out of their car and tap the area I have the bright red arrows pointing at in the above pic. This locks the car. With normal gloves it does not work. The title is correct.

I just lock all the doors as I leave the car by pushing the lock button on the inside of the door. That's what it is there for.

You can do it with gloves on, no matter the weather. It won't make the alarming beep sound either. I have never had to touch the door handle to lock it, or the SKS key.

No, it's locking. The unlocking part works fine with gloves on, even thick ones. The locking touch sensors are a bit more finicky.

Yes the power door lock button is another solution. I've rarely touched that button on the Gen 3 lol. SKS + automatic locks, I've really have no reason to use it.
