Re: Took home my new 2011 Prius Five today

I don't know if this applies to the Prius, but I was at a Honda new owner's workshop where they said do not change the oil before it is due - the oil is filled with a break-in additive at the factory.

I won't be changing the oil early, that's for sure.

do not know maybe someone here who actually knows could tell us if Toyota uses break in oil and or additives?
I do know that is is a hot topic in the oil change threads of most auto forums. There is also quite a debate here on PC regarding the oil change interval.

    Aloha,

do not know but it seems be prominent in Honda and Acura forums. Maybe they're the only japanese company that does it?

Filled up on Friday the 13th of May and I suffered the lowest MPG yet in 8,500 miles. I only got 50 MPG right at the EPA estimate. I was a little behind on checking tire pressures so I took out the compressor yesterday and aired up the fleet. My Prius tires were all in the low to mid 30's PSI above the recommended inflation pressures though. I have been keeping the TP at 40 PSI all the way around so we shall see if the lower than normal TP was the culprit. Only other thing I can think of is the rain it was, raining most of last week.

Do wheels with TPMS sensors lose air faster than those without TPMS?

The sensor is wireless and mounted inside the rim (rather than the valve stem), so I don't think it affects air pressure loss since no wires pass through the rim. If your loosing a few pounds, maybe your valves need to be checked.

The valve stem is part of the sensor, it is what holds it on. That's why the valve stem is metal and has flats like a nut or bolt would it screws on to the sensor to anchor it. Old school rubber valve stems did not do much and the did not have the stress of having a sensor pack attached to them. I was just thinking that there is a gasket or an o-ring sealing between the sensor, the wheel, the valve stem and possibly it could not seal perfectly allowing some air by?

Well I am back at the dealership for my Prius's second dealer service two freebies down two to go. She currently has 10625 miles on the odometer since January 4th, 2011 and had 9,552 miles on the oil. I had changed it at 1,073 miles myself at home. I asked the service advisor to have the maintenance technician collect an oil sample for me so I can send it off for analysis.

I was away from home for 42 days and my wife did not drive my Prius at all she only moved it once to cut the grass and then put it right back in it's parking spot. I got back home on Friday the 22nd and drove the car for the first time on Saturday the 23rd, it started and drove just fine. I have been reading threads about people worrying about letting there car sit mine sat for 6 weeks and it seems fine.

I am happy to be back home and glad to be back behind the wheel of my Prius. Not to start a war but, Uncle Sugar provided me with a 2010 Nissan Versa rental car while I was on my trip and I put 2,500 miles on it and it only got about 27-29 MPG. It was an okay little car but is a Econobox for real, no way a Prius could be considered an econobox.

Interesting that Hawaiian Fives with ATP lack LKA. Never knew that.

Yep no LKA and no Safety Connect as of yet. I would have liked to have all the options but could not. Don't know how much I would have used the LKA but I use the DRCC everyday. I rarely use the APGS only when I want to show off or have all day to park.

I always use DRCC and LKA together, although I know some skip the LKA as they consider it too flaky. Don't know why they'd think that because you have to actively steer the wheel anyway or LKA will cancel.

I went to Maui last summer and I saw nothing unusual that would make LKA unsuitable. It's not like anyone would use it on the road to Hana.

My mother and her husband came out to visit a couple of months ago and they took my wife and I to Maui. We attempted the Hana highway I got car sick and went to sleep. When I awoke we were back in Kahului a few miles shy of Hana my mom called off the journey and ordered the vehicle turned around.

There is another car sick story and lesson about getting fuel prior to going up Haleakala but I will save that one.

I know that not driving makes a big difference as far as car sickness goes but the vehicle makes a big difference too. My mothers husband could learn allot from a Prius driver but being in the back seat of Jeep Patriot was akin to riding in a WW I tank.

When we got back to Oahu I offered them my car to use for the week. You don't know how glad I was when they declined and got a rental, after the driving display on Maui I was worried about turning over my Prius.

Well I learned all about what happens when you do not properly engage the interlock on the HV battery service plug cover. I was messing around last night looking around checking my aux. batt. voltage checking out the spare tire and whatnot there it was staring me in the face, the bright orange service plug cover. I have never tried to remove it so I slid the latch over to the left and gave it a tug and there it was, gave it a look and reinstalled it or so I thought.

I got in the car this morning to go to work and the instrument cluster was lit up like a Christmas tree complete with the Check Hybrid System warning message on the MID. I immediately thought it was the service plug cover so I unloaded the car gained access to the service plug and removed and reinstalled the cover a few times, nothing. I got on PC for some research read a few threads learned that you need to cycle the car from Off to Ready three times to clear the CHS message, did that still nothing. So I went back and tinkered with the cover some more and I had saw the safety interlock pin and receptacle the night before but I thought it engaged when you closed the latch. I did not realize I had to slide the latch back to the right to engage the interlock, once I slid that latch over I knew I was home free. I got back in the car and cycled it three times and off to work I went. I ended up being 15 minutes late, my coworkers laughed when I told them what happened and that my car is smarter than me.

IDK if anyone reads this thread at all but rather than starting a new one to try and find the Plus Performance Package individual component part numbers, I will just ask here, does anybody have the part numbers? I thought someone had listed it here on PC someplace? I searched and read most of the PPP threads but I did not find the P/N's.

    Corrected spelling!

    Dustoff003 and Tideland Prius:

A comment was made in the threads just this week that the PPP parts could be purchased seperately in the Pacific Region (of the US), but maybe not in every region. I suggest calling the parts department at some Toyota dealers in California to see what they say.

Keep us posted! BTW, that's what I intend to do with a 2012-5/ATP when they become available.

Jon B. as a Prius Expert, PC Mod, WDU Panelest and the President of Canada I really expected you to have all the P/N's for me! J/K! I could have swore that a member posted that the PPP components were available to be purchased peice mail without the need to provide a VIN and listed the part numbers. I can't find that post though.

Mahalo Mr. Bill! Just a tip you can modify your posts you just need to click the edit button in the lower right corner no need to post again.

Well, when you put it that way....

    j/k

Yeah I don't know the part number for that and I did a quick search on Google but couldn't find it either. We may need someone from the service department to ring it through (I assume there will be replacement parts should any part of the kit gets damaged.)
