What is the easiest way to procure extra smartkeys for a 2004 Prius. We just purchased one and it only came with one. I have never trusted a car with one key, let alone a battery-operated key.

I am guessing that a dealer could get one for us, but the nearest Toyota dealer is nearly two hours away.

You need the dealer to program the car to accept the new smart fob. The easiest way to get a new one is pay the dealer.

And FYI, they are not cheap (or I got ripped off ;-). I just did the same and paid $290 for the smart key, mechanical key, and programming labor.

pasoto1, no they are not interchangeable

jasmayor, while I agree having one key is not smart, it has nothing to do with the battery as the key can work with a dead battery, you slide the slot to remove the mechanical key which can open the drivers door only (the key is tiny so its difficult to get torque to turn the lock). Even a dead battery smart key will start the car by sliding it into the key slot and powering the car up as normal, just remember to remove the key when you're done driving the car.

You should practice this technique at least once because the 12V Prius battery is one of the most common things to go bad on a gen II Prius, and a weak 12V battery combined with a weak old door locking actuator means you may one day have trouble getting into your car so you should know how to get into the car the 20th century way when all your 21st century gismos fail.

i know i've read on here that the car is paired to the key, not the other way around as logic would suggest, and it can only be done once, so buying used smartkeys is about as useful as buying used blocks of wood.

    am i misinformed NinnJinn??

I would call your Toyota dealer about used keys. I know that programming the key costs something. They get the fob and then they program it with your car. I would think they could reprogram one (what if it lost its connection sometime...they would have to reprogram then). I ordered an extra one, and they said it would "arrive" x day and they would program it when I brought my car in (took about 1/2 hour). It was expensive (like $150 for the key and programming) so I told my spouse the extra stays in the safe, not on her chain!

i have one i could sell you. (might need new battery) it is after all about 8 years old.

now, you will need to have your dealer reprogram it. that will cost about $75 or so. at least that is what i paid when i lost one of my 2006 keys.

now this is not a SMS key fob. its a plain ole package 1 key

Just so everyone knows, those are not Smart Keys in this lot. The smart key is identified by a silver/chrome Toyota symbol on the back. The ones in this lot are non SKS fobs.

Used smartkeys can be paired with a new Prius, but it takes extra work and the right tools. Most dealers can do it, although some don't know how. Basically what is done is a seed reset, where the SKS ECU is cleared and reseeded. This requires a call to Toyota to get the new seed code, which is time limited. After the ECU is reset, *all* of the fobs are paired. Once again, all of the fobs must be paired, not just the new ones.

I bought a fob off of ebay took it to dealer, they tried to program it no luck.
Sent it back they sent me another one, couldn't program it either, didn't charge
me either time, if it would have worked it would have been $60.00, payed $38.50
on ebay. I called a locksmith he will cut 2 keys and program all three smart keys
    for $90.00 tomorrow.
