As the title says - help me not want a Prius C so bad. I have my Gen III 2010 Prius II and I love it to death. However, the C gets better mileage and is improved in some ways. Help me stop thinking about buying a C and keep my Gen III! :p

Oh goodness, lets leave that thread behind. I never intended for it to get so out of hand. ANYWAY, any thoughts?

Our 2010's have more space for passengers and cargo.
New model could have issues, while gen3 is proven. Oil pump, for example.

I am struggling with the same thoughts...

Have been thinking I would trade next year for a PHV, and likely will, but c is looking sweet.

Apparently no real improvement in gas mileage, less mass, so slightly less safe in a crash, it's smaller and I would guess less comfortable.
You would start the depreciation cycle all over again.
Another hefty sales tax charge, increased license fees and if you trade in it will cost probably 7 grand for the same equipment level.
So, it costs money (a lot) and you get a slower, smaller car, but the colors are cute! Have I missed anything?

You missed the fact that every reviewer including hypermilers and fun-to-drivers say it's mpg beats the socks off the gen3. Also, that the seats on the Two and up make it reasonably comfortable. Also, I doubt it would cost 7K to trade a gen3 '10 for a new c, once the backlog wears off anyway.

I had also considered one, but it's EPA rated MPG is nearly equivalent to the Gen3(slightly worse on the highway, slightly better in the city). I'm curious just how significant these supposed differences truly are.

If, say, 55 mpg is as easy to attain in the C as 50 mpg in the 3, it would be a tempting upgrade.

I would do it! Sell or trade your G3 it still has good resale, get the C drive it for a couple of years and if you don't like it trade back for for another Prius! Maybe a Prius Plus?

Get ahold of yourself! How 'bout ...

The Prius c is 17" or thereabouts shorter
c has smaller tires/wheels - you now it's not going to eat highway asphalt as well as the 'liftback'.
You're giving up substantial people and cargo space for little savings on gas...

(do the math on how much less gas pumped in from 50 to 60 MPG. It's not much different ... 1.5 gallons difference in 450 miles (to some that's huge though)

... It's only a car. It will only do the same thing yours already does. If you do trade, in a coupe years, you'll likely want something else (temptation getting the best of you) ;)

    :D

Wayne Gerdes of cleanmpg got 70 in the gen3 on the interstate versus 84 in the c in similar driving. He hints at 100 mpg on the right local route. But that's Wayne, so scale back for humans.

Danny got in the 60's and I think he would be 50ish in the gen3.

Looks like a 20% improvement in the real world if one tries.

I'd never tell someone to not do something they want to do, if they can afford to do it, and all things are equal. Cars are luxury items.

But I would say? Aren't you getting a little ahead of yourself?

First of all IMO the EPA reported mileage difference between regular hatchback Prius...and Prius C is so small as to IMO not be a significant deal maker. Combined reported mileage is just about a wash.

Once we get more longterm owners on the road? We might see a bigger difference. But right now? That wouldn't be a reason I'd embrace the change.

Also have you actually physically seen one? Actually sat in one?

    I find I must wait.

Once the "newness" of Prius C wears off, both literally and psychologically? The truth is Prius C is the entry level Prius. Your Prius II...would be considered a step up...if only because it's Mid-Size as opposed to sub-compact.

I'm debating just the opposite. I've BEEN waiting for The Prius C, but now wonder if what I've really wanted all along has been a standard Prius.

    It's a tough call.

I know some initial reports, including Dannys, has been that Prius C easily exceeds EPA reported MPG. BUT...I think we need more drivers for a longer time to really get an idea.

    Great if it does....but?....

You say you love your Prius II to death?

Well at least you have to wait and see a Prius C in person. You are comparing a mid-size vehicle to a sub-compact sized vehicle.

I'm guessing 10-30 minutes actually in the seat of a Prius C will either convince you to keep your Prius II OR you'll be sitting next in the dealership office signing your life away.

    Good Luck.

When I compare, I'm thinking Prius C-3 or 4...very well equipped, vs. Prius II....and I can see your dillema.

    I thought

Fabric-trimmed two-tone front seats, 6-way adjustable driver’s seat; 4-way adjustable front passenger seat and seatback pocket.

on the Two and up included height adjustment. Am I wrong?

The Prius c has no Power Mode. I can't drive except in power mode. It makes the car reasonably lively. Without it, it is sluggish. Also it never makes sense to get rid of a decent car before it is 15 years old. You must keep it that long to recover all the depreciation. I get very attached to my cars and keep them at least 15 years

Hey, maybe the Prius C doesn't have a Power Mode, because it is so unbelievably awesome it doesn't need a Power Mode? Huh? Huh? Ever think of that?

Maybe it's so nimble, so responsive that it's "Normal" doesn't need augmentation?

Maybe Toyota didn't add the Power Mode for our own safety. Maybe a Power Mode on a Prius C would be like giving Meth laced Oats to Secretariat?

If "Normal" is Superman? Then maybe ECO mode is Clark Kent?

I'm just kidding. Ignore me the cold meds are kicking in...
