Health care there is really free - that is another subject.

However, current fuel prices in Europe are already at $8+ /gal.

Here in Monroe, GA we are ranging from $3.43 (Allstar-unbranded) to $3.49 (BP & Exxon). Premium is the real killer hitting $3.89 here in this little town. I'm glad the Prius takes regular but it is getting close to time for a fill up in the Navigator.

Where I live it's $4.83 a US gal, but 7 Km from home in the US I can get it for $3.40 a gal.

Cheapest locally in Northern Ireland: £1.309 per litre (95 octane unleaded)
At 3.78 litres to the (US) gallon, that's about £4.948 per gallon.

Xe.com lists today's spot rates around 1.578 for £ to $, which would make it around $7.80 per gallon at that rate.
I've seen prices 10 pence per litre more expensive than that (60 cents per gallon) in rural locations.

As has been said before: more than half of that total, is tax.

I can recall visiting Florida a few years back when (partly due to FX) UK prices were running at about $10 per gallon. Culture shock...

Gas here got to a record high of $3.699 a gallon on 1/12/12...then we bought the new Prius on the next day and prices fell to $3.089! Since then it has fluctuated a lot with about every station having the same pruice, but in the last two days it is all over the place from corner to corner....noe at $3.229 to 3.559.....all you guys from Indy to Kokomo, IN need to thank us for the lower prices. You also need to than us for the decent weather we have been having...directly tied to putting brand new studded snows on both our drivers and picking up my dads snow blower!

I think we're doing artificially well at the moment as the exchange rate for £-$ is in our favour and oil is purchased in $'s. I think our American friends are paying what we were about 4 or 5 years ago. I remember the good old days of £0.60 and £0.70p a litre :(

    But as others have said in Europe our basic healthcare is free, prescription drugs are heavily discounted etc, so what we pay in tax we get back in other ways. People can opt for additional private cover too if required. Anyhow, our fuel prices are below (feb2012);

    UK Petrol £1.33 litre = £5.02 or $7.90 a US gallon
    UK Diesel £1.40 litre = £5.29 or $8.33 a US gallon

Here in Sydney, Australia, the prices range from $1.34 to $1.50 per litre - that range is per week as they discount petrol on different days.

Using RikM's conversion of 3.78 per (US) gallon, at the highest price of $1.50, that comes out as $5.67 per gallon, and with the Aussie doing so well against the US dollar, the current conversion of 1.07 make is US$ 5.30 a gallon.

Also, like the UK, half the Aussie price is tax.

prices are a bit higher this winter going no lower than $3.219 and right now at $3.36

many reports stating prices to hit $4.50-5 here (our gas taxes are a bit higher) in the next few months. now, getting ready to get gas in next few days we shall see but prelim estimate looks to be about a 10 cent jump from last fillup

Currently cheapest reporting gas in my suburb outside Chicago is 3.479. I think prices are edging down (i am sure only temporary event)...

I'm hoping to fill up when i hear prices are going back up... I have a person in a local forum that predicts daily gas from information he has on wholesale prices...

All i know is it's high, but i really feel for people that fill up once a week their 20 gallon tanks!

Oliemaatschappij: € 0,709 (38.3%) (bare price at oilrefinery)
BTW: € 0,321 (17.4%) (Value Added Tax, like a fixed federal tax)
Accijns: € 0,821 (44.3%) (Special tax only on things they want to tax heavily like gas and sigarettes)
Totaalprijs Euro 95: € 1,852 (Total price per liter)

    3.785 l in a gallon, so 7.01$/gallon, so 8.35$/gallon at todays rate.
I think Turkey and the UK sometimes beat us, but the UK for one has neglible roadtax (they won't agree, but iirc it's like 10-20% of our roadtax, my Prius costs 724euro/yr or 862$/yr).

Diesel is cheaper (1.5€/liter or 6.72$/gallon), but roadtax even worse (2344€ or almost 2800$/year for my Volvo V70 AWD).

I'll save 10,000$ in roadtax if I buy an electric car right now* instead of my Volvo. Too bad a Model X is >80k (7 seater, 90D 2017 50k on the clock) which is too rich (pun intended) for my taste.

*(Electric cars are roadtax exempt until 1st of Jan 2025)
