I have a 2005 Prius, with 144k miles. It is likely throwing a P0420 code and the catalytic converter probably needs to go.

This car was bought and registered in Arizona in 2005. In California a Cat replacement is covered. Do I also qualify for a free Cat in Arizona if my car was bought in 2005?

I'm looking at $1600 here, please help.

You are on your own, as the state legislators in AZ did not see fit to implement CARB regs until the 2012 model year.

Ok, well since I am on my own.

I've read virtually ALL the cat threads about four time each...I still have alot of questions:

It sounds like there someone had success with the "walker 16337" part, maybe this is the way to go. Can anyone advise? On the otherhand, how likely is it to be a sensor problem? Can the dealer techs tell the difference from a defective cat. Is there some kind of emissions test that actually tests the exhaust emissions to see if the cat is bad?

Likely P0420? Do you know for sure that you only have P0420 and nothing else? Does your engine consume oil? Have you ever changed the plugs? Did your or anyone else run a fuel injector cleaning with a product connected directly to the rail? What is your fuel economy like lately? Anything else that is different in the past few months?

Cats usually don't wear out. If possible, it would help you in the long run to find the root cause, so that you aren't doing this every 20,000 miles. If you have only P0420 and no other codes, it is probably the cat.
