Our Charging Station was installed today

    As I reported previously, the charging station failed (Fault light on permanently) on Jan. 3, 2012. Today (3 weeks later), the installer came and replaced the unit with a new one which at the moment appears to be working perfectly.

    Now if only my car would come.:rockon:

    Rather than starting a new thread I wanted to share a picture of my EVSE. I went with the GE Wattstation and had everything done in 2011 which qualified me for the 30% Federal credit. Now I just need my Plug-in, which should hopefully be here in 3-4 weeks!

    The Wattstation was $999 at Lowes, but it's a 30A, not 16A. Even though the 2012 PiP won't make use of the 30A I'm hoping the next generation will down the road so I wanted to buy the higher amperage unit now and have it. After the credit, $700 is acceptable to me. I realize to many it is not, but it's a decision some will make and many will not.

    I hope you didn't take any other big credits in 2011! I put my EVSE in in 2011, expecting to get the 30% -- but my 30% credit from my solar hot water tripped the TMT and made me miss the EVSE credit!

    Nope, this'll be it. But Thanks for the heads up, that sucks you got limited after doing things good like solar and an evse.

    What with the credit now expired the lessons learned aren't directly applicable - but might help anyone who did get an EVSE done in 2011 (and solar, EV, etc) figure out why TurboTax gleefully says "Zero" in the EVSE section without telling you why.

    Maybe I'm not reading you post right. It's over for 2012 but it was 30% in 2011 (and I think 50% on 2010). I had mine all done in 2011 so I'll get 30% back.

    Looks great, and yes the tax credit for charging stations ended Dec 2011, just as electric cars are starting to hit the roads.

    What a kick in the butt to EV or Plug-in buyers this year who didn't know about the credit. It would have so paid to just have them installed last year, that's why I did it. Heck, I'd have done it in 2010 for the 50% credit, but back then I bet these evse's were quite a bit more money than they are now, which still is not cheap.

    My 30A Schnieder was 1099 as installed (I bought from home depot for 679 and paid 420 for installation). Had I known I wouldn't have gotten the tax credit I would have installed myself. Oh well. In late 2010 you maybe could have gotten an AV (nissan) unit from ebay / cash&carry, but I seem to remember them still being costly and hard to get. either way, tax break or not, I still don't think I could do better today.

    For people currently doing electrical work who might be intersted in "future proofing" I suggest running a 40A circuit to an appropriate plug in the garge - but not buying an EVSE yet.

    If you are somewhat electrically handy, you can build a 30A EVSE for $400-$450 total in parts. This is a topic on the mynissanleaf forum, but the project has its own webite now:

    Chris is selling the completed control board for $85 (including shipping), the 30A relay, 12V power supply and "CT" (Current Transformer for GFI detection) can all be bought from "digikey" for about $50, the only other thing needed is a box to put it in, a couple of gland nuts, the power input cable & plug (of your choosing, an L6-30P is a good choice). The most expensive part is still the J-1772 end with the cabling, around $262 from Avnet...

    Exactly what type of 20A breaker did they install? Was it GFCI? You can read the breaker type from the label on it. Thanks for the info.

    I have my answer from the Leviton website. 240V dedicated line does not require a GFCI.

    I believe the EVSE itself has a GFCI circuit.
