Sorry for another thread on this topic ..... but looking over all the warranties and I have a question:

My Prius was purchased in PA and titled/registered by the dealer in NJ - it is a NJ car in my companies name. So are aren't all Prius models 50 state? and supplied with California Emissions systems?

I purchased the Toyota 5 year 100k extended -- but it looks like those items that I was most concerned about are already covered for the 100k -- and if I am reading it correctly the battery is covered to 150k.

The warranty book is not very clear on covered components ... and should be.

I'm not seeing much value in the 5 year 100k -- even the 7 year 125k looks suspect considering the exclusions.

Yikes!!! So what's the point in buying an "Extended Toyota Warranty" then if it doesn't cover the Hybrid battery too?

Many of the exclusions are normal for extended warranties -- no wear items or cosmetic component ... some do exclude bulbs. I don't like the exclusion of the hoses and especially the Hybrid Components.

I called Toyota to ask about the different warranties. Customer service agreed that the wording is "not clear". But he indicated to me that cars shipped to CA are different??

But then he said that the warranty in NJ for the battery is 8 years and 150k -- he could not give me a list of all the parts that would be covered under the CARB 8/150k warranty? I am going to follow up on this.

In any event -- the 5 year 100k warranty that I purchased to cover the hybrid system is completely unnecessary -- because it is already covered.

CS says that the 7 year 125k contract is one of the most popular because it covers most of the items not covered under the special warranties of the Prius after the 36k new warranty ends and covers those items and the inverter after 100k to 125k.

Page 11 of my 2010 Prius Warranty & Maintenance Guide states that the Hybrid Battery is warranted for 120 months/150,000 miles in selected states: California, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

On page 19, it states that the hybrid battery is covered for 8 years/100,000 miles in all other states. The inverter is also warranted for 8/100,000. It's not clear whether the inverter is covered for 150,000 miles in California, which would lead me to assume it is not, but it's arguable that it is.

The engine and transaxle are warranted for 60,000 miles.

NJ is a CARB state. The warranty is 10 years/150000 miles by law. All Prius are built to the CARB warranty. Toyota cheaps out by offering the warranty mandated by the states' laws.

Yeah, well, if they're "debating" whether to cover it under the 150,000 CA warranty or extended warranty, it sounds like they're trying to decide which route would be easier in terms of paperwork and getting paid (much like deciding which insurance company to charge in case of multiple coverages). Otherwise, why even contemplate charging the repair under the CA warranty?

I wouldn't put it that way. No companies would warranty anything to 150,000 miles unless forced to do so now that cars are basically built to be throwaways. In the old days, you used to be able to invest in one car and have it last for the rest of your life. Now they're throwaways.

Just to be clear this is covered by the factory warranty. Not the rip off extended warranty.

If the inverter is only covered to 100,000 the extened warranty would only cover it from 100,000 to 125,000 miles. Is $1,000 to $2,000 for the extended warranty worth that 25,000 miles?

People do not waste your money.

True. Or the transaxle, which is already warranted to 60,000 miles. So, yes, I think it's not a good deal, because probability of failure in that range is pretty low. Yes, I'm taking a gamble, and yes, I might get hit with a $3,500 repair bill. But that could happen at 126,000 or 151,000 miles, too.

Well - I obviously canceled the contract prior to the 30 days. I was going to anyway because you can buy the same coverage from Troy for $795.00 and my dealer charged me "list" price .... $1160.00. So they are making a nice profit.

I have purchased many certified preowned cars -- and they all come with the balance of the factory and then various amounts of factory extended warranty. With Luxury cars -- especially German -- I would not buy one without the coverage ..... all have worked out in our favor

I am still going to try to find out what hybrid parts are covered under the various warranties .....

True. I always determine this on a car by car basis. With Toyota/Lexus you do not need extended warranty. I had always purchased it with Mustangs as they're not exactly known for their reliability (although Fords have improved considerably in reliability in recent years).

I have purchase four CPO Lexus vehicles -- Lexus gives you 2 years and 100k. The CPO vehicles are about 2k more -- so you get a perfect vehicle and the warranty. Two of the cars used way more than 2k of repairs - one used almost nothing.

With all the CPO cars the dealer did have upfront costs.
