I have yet to see this option in the Display window. The Map display appears to be Day mode day or night. I have the headlight switch set to Auto. I tried switching the headlights on manually, during the day, but I can't get the Day / Night switch to appear in the Display window.

Make sure the dashboard light wheel is not turned past the detent to "bright". It will cause a day map all the time.

Hmmm... the dashboard light wheel *was* turned past the detent to "bright". I lowered it, but it made no difference to being able to switch between Day or Night. Also, the wheel has no effect on dashboard or Nav. screen brightness?? Is this because it is sunny out? I tried different settings on the headlight switch, with no change.

Try covering the sensor button on the top of the right dash if you want to check in daylight.

Works like a charm! :) The problem was the brightness control indent.

SOLUTION TO NAV WON'T SWITCH TO NIGHT MODE IN 2012 PRIUS

Just bought a 2012 Prius and had the same problem. The solution, however, doesn't involve the brightness control. Here's what finally worked: Go to SETUP. Touch DISPLAY SETTINGS. Under the SCREEN OFF bar there should be a bar that says DAY MODE. (If it doesn't appear, try turning on the car.) If there's an orange mark on the left that's the problem. Touch the DAY MODE bar until the little orange mark on the left goes away. Then make sure your NAV is set to AUTOMATIC and it will adjust to day/night views. Good luck!

For the 2010 if you would like the day mode all of the time and not the night mode, select Display and turn on the headlights. A Day Mode selection will appear at the top of the screen. Select Day Mode and the white background will stay even with the headlights on. The intensity will dim at night.

I personally like the white day background much better than the black night background.

With a 2012 Four, it shouldn't be in DAY MODE anyway. With automatic light control (Toyota speak for automatic headlights), the nav screen won't dim if you turn on your headlights during the day.

Reviving an old thread as I think the Day Mode may be the issue. Both the wife and I drive 2013 Prius 5's. I noticed driving her car yesterday that the radio preset buttons were totally blue and very hard to see in the sunlight. My radio preset display has the station number in white with a blue line around for the button shape. I haven't had time to play with her Day Mode, but wonder if that's the problem in how it's set.
