The novelty of hypermiling warn off?

    ....and from an environmental 'sustainability' point of view, we should all aim for 4L/100 km or better (according to Joseph J. Romm, author of Hell and High Water).

    I'm close at 4.4L/100km. It's tough in a GenII unless you have a great commute. :)

    Yup, 4.3 to 4.4, that's pretty much what I'm averaging too F8L. :)

    BTW F8L, I finally got my Ecopia EP100s fitted a couple of weeks ago and have managed to hit 4.2 L/100km over the last two tanks. :D I'll have to post a brief review of my thoughts on this tire after I've got a few more data points.

    Well, that's well above EPA ratings so congrats! :)

    Please do post a review on the tires. I'm sad they may be discontinued. :(

    with 300 miles on this tank, and temps in the high 50's the last two days, i managed to get the mfd from 57 to 58.5. i love it! i have never driven a 'fast' car in 40 years and probably never will. can't wait for my pip!:cheer2:

    About the best I can do is ~52-54 mpg. There are virtually no long, level roads around here.

    I am learning that as I gain experience.

    I'm able to squeeze 4.9L/100 km (48.003 USMPG) manual math method right now (MFD shows 4.6L/100 km last tankful) with our 10% ethanol gas plus temps at or just below freezing plus winter tires.

    I hope once summer temps arrive, the improvement will be like my HCH was:

    • winter (i.e. average of any tankful worse than or equal to 5.0L/100 km) 5.32L/100 km (44.213 USMPG); and
    • rest of year 4.65L/100 km (50.584 USMPG).

    Hypermiling has worn off, but its fun to give it another try.

    My driving mostly consists of highway @ the speed limit. Winter makes it harder to achieve higher numbers.

    Feels like ages ago that posted this thread!

    The novelty of hypermiling has died out for me, although i still do practice some techniques. I've been driving a N/A 77hp fiat with a sequential gearbox and still get 40mpg despite regularly redlining it (as it powershifts on the redline). Although when driving when relaxed or not in a hurry i still pulse and glide, and shift to 5th gear by 50km/h (30mph)

    Please don't hypermile on anything but a completely empty road. Not everyone irritated by it is an "a$$clown."

    We're just normal people who want to drive at consistent speeds from there to there, instead of being stuck behind someone who already has one of the most efficient cars on the road, but needs to get that last little bit of diminishing returns out of it and doesn't have a problem with upsetting the flow of traffic to do so.

    My adrenaline junky days were spent on a bicycle or diving off cliffs, never driving aggressively or dangerously in a car. So 'hypermiling' for me is just a lifelong habit, and means driving the speed limit or a little less if cars can pass me they want to, and coasting to corners and red lights.

    I do not try and force sane driving on others, although I sure wish petrol was expensive enough to knock some sense into the idiots.

    Request partially granted, partially denied. Just because some hypermiling techniques upset traffic flow doesn't mean that all of them do.

    Only homicidal road rage cultures can't coexist with any hypermiling methods.

    Does that include just driving at the speed limit? (Not a rhetorical question btw, genuinely wondering). I've noticed that some members have mentioned receiving road rage unless they go at least 10 MPH (for example) over the posted speed limit.

    Here in Australia speed limits are often fairly aggressively policed with fixed and mobile speed cameras etc. So going at the speed limit is something that most other drivers will understand.

    I can only speak for the oil capital of the US - Texas - but I don't sense any particular discrimination against hybrids or electric vehicles - Texas drivers hate anyone driving less than 10 mph over the speed limit, and pass rather aggressively if you ask me. We are also the leader in pickup trucks - just this morning (for grins while trying to merge onto the highway access road from our subdivision) that 18 of the 30 vehicles speeding down the access road in front of my exit were pickups or full size SUV's.

    All that being said, I guess I'm not a hypermiler though - I just drive the darn car; it gets 42 around town, 44-45 on highway...guess I'm a slackard by you guys' standards.

    Funny you mention the speeding pickup/SUV thing. I usually see two extremes with these vehicles. They are either flying down the road at 80+ (younger white guys with "I'm a badass" type stickers all over) or they are in the slow lanes (elderly and Mexicans hauling work equipment). I just shake my head at the egomaniacs flying down the road with TAPOUT and various other stickers, that make you look like and idiot, stuck to their trucks. Especially when they have a "support our troops" sticker. Hypocrisy at its best!

    In some parallel universe, I wish a bumper sticker would exist such as "My driving habits aid the national security, so back off!"

    I suppose when gas is $2/liter, folks up here in Canada may drive their new F-150s at the speed limit....of course if $1.30/liter is not expensive enough, maybe $2 wont be either......"end rant"

    Being an extremist wore off after a couple years, primarily after I graduated college and my free time dropped to zero. Driving 50 in the far right lane is a sure-fire way to be late for everything when you're on a tight schedule.As an extremist, I was able to squeeze 63 MPG out of a few tanks.

    The later I'm running, the faster I drive. Pure and simple.

    That said, I still incorporate many other techniques (tires at max sidewall, coasting to lights, cutting the engine at long stops, etc.). I'm still getting about 37-40 in the winter, and 45 in the summer.

    With gas prices pushing $5 and beyond, you bet yer nice person I hypermile, I just do not carry it to an extreme. I am more than happy to roll down the "2" at 72 getting 99MPG with gravity assist! However, going back up hill at 72 gets you 19MPG, that sucks! I go 65, it jumps to 29~31 mpg, OK better. Logic might state if I went 55, MPH will jump higher. Yeah, so would the likelihood that I would get run over by a slow moving truck! I am willing to accept the 29~31 MPG uphill. I am usually in the #4 lane, it's a 5 lane highway. If someone behind me does not like me going the speed limit, pick another lane, you have 4 to choose from. Life's a bitch.
    As far as Hypermiling wearing off, I don't think so, I would rather direct my anger at the people who are jacking up the price of fuel.

    I'm the lonely guy in the right lane of the 401 doing the legal (100 kph) limit...

    I'll assume you mean the folks that drive up the rate of consumption (of the supply limited commodity) thru in-efficient use.....and not some 'mysterious price fixing cabal'...
