No, it's because it was a small, high-cost market with the primary consumers being people heavily concerned with image with the production using furry animals bred or killed only for their fur.

    It was an easy target.

Leather is produced from animals that people eat. How the hell are you going to persuade people that leather is cruel if you can't persuade them not to eat meat from the same animals?

PS I like cats. I don't like dogs. I wish we didn't have a cat (or a lizard) but I'm stuck with a cat as long as I'm with my wife. I really, really hate the idea of pets and I think that to purchase a pet you should pay for everything up-front. A lifetime supply of food and an insurance policy to cover any required treatment. That'd make people think.
PPS Our cat was adopted from the Humane Society. It was about 1 year old. We didn't get a kitten because we're sane. They have lots of animals. I hate that people buy from commercial breeders.

I have to admit I have never understood this selective caring for some animals, and agribusiness horror farms for the remainder. Treb should go to Vietnam and dine on dog until he aspirates from hypocrisy.

That doesn't appear to be what is going on with Peta shelters in Virginia though.

While some of the surrendered by owner could have been turned away from other places before arriving here. They haven't taken any transfers from other shelters.

Other shelters in Va seem to do better.

I just wished Peta would stop lying by omission, and that in their utopia all domestic breeds and animals would be extinct. But then their $30 million would dry up.

You've been told you are wrong, and you are wrong. It is not fabricated BS, you just don't understand this. You have multiple people who work first hand telling you what goes on, but don't believe it.

Just because an animal has not yet bitten someone, it does not mean it is ok. If an animal shows territorial signs like hogging the food dish, growling, marking, or just biting others that get close, it is classified differently. And to be transferred from another agency it has to be accepted by another agency first.

Thread summary (before it dies or moves hopefully):

    PETA attacks agribusiness;
Agribusiness hires hatchet firm to dig up "dirt" to discredit PETA
"dirt" makes its way to right wing outlets with usual attached keywords (liberal, etc)
Ignorant, manipulated readers disseminate "dirt" with faux outrage, never realizing (or wanting to realize) they are suckers in a propaganda game.

First and foremost. PETA as an organization has been way too close to destructive acts throughout their history. So I'm not defending PETA here, but I'd like to see real evidence of "guilt" prior to passing judgement. So far, the only evidence has to do with rates and numbers, not anything "proving" abuse of animals. That said, and having been educated on shelter operations, I can see the danger of reading statistics improperly. From numbers alone, you cannot make a judgement from far away.

Do you know what a Bite History actually is? You may be surprised between what you think and what it actually means.

Classifying an animal as adoptable has nothing to do with finding someone that will adopt. For example, the most common breed taken into the SPCA shelter are pit bulls. Most are classified as adoptable. Yet when people come looking for a rescue to adopt, pit bulls are far, far down on the list. You can figure out the rest. Adoptable only means that it does not have to be put to sleep after the initial evaluation.

If the shelter is doing something wrong, it should be fixed. PETA as an organization should be fixed. But nothing you have brought up is actually showing something broke (nor working optimally). Keep in mind that the success of a shelter is very, very dependent on the location, the number of volunteers, and funding. If the PETA shelter is in a backward region, the funding is low, few cages are available, and few volunteers are available, then the shelters "numbers" are going to poorer....but not due to the shelter employees efforts.

I'm sorry, but kill ratio is only a statistical number. The real story requires direct investigation of the total shelter operation. None of that has been provided. Until then, the jury is out.

Again, I cannot say whether these shelters are not doing the best they can with the constraints they face. However, I know the danger of making judgements entirely on statistics.

    I don't get it.
So PITA [sic] kills off a majority of their animals.

    So?
Sanderson Farms and Tyson are probably close to 100-percent. It'd be exactly 100-percent, but sometimes you'll see a chicken or two wandering around when they unload the trucks.

If some people out there want to advocate (selectively) for the better treatment of our oppressed animal friends, I personally have no heartburn with it as long as they're not the nut-jobs that engage in criminal activities. I think it's more than a little goofy, but there are people out there venting their collective spleens about worse things than meat, leather and fur.
Animal shelters have a tough job---and for the most part they're engaged in their day to day slog without benefits from PITA [sic---again] meaning that they have to rely on local tax dollars and donations and mostly volunteer labor. I’ve got friends and family that have done that gig, and while I’m nobody’s idea of a PITA member, I certainly think that spending a few bucks per county on animal shelters isn’t a bad idea. Our local WalMart used to donate torn animal food containers to local shelters (heartless, bastard big business that they are) before the word got out and "animal rights weenies" started tearing up puppy chow bags. Now?
No more freebies for Fido. I don't suppose it ever occurred to these geniuses to just buy a bag for the shelter themselves or drive by and kick over a twenty or so.

I'm OK with just letting shelters be, and letting the PITA folks do their thing as well.
Just leave me and my omnivorous diet and leathers alone, and everything will be cool. :D

I would like this discussion have less politics in it.

Yes, PETA definitely touches a socio-political nerve, but so does the Prius.

I'd like to see a world with no stray pets, no [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivisection"]vivisection[/ame], clothes without fur or leather, people eating a lot less meat (I have not ruled out going vegan someday), having enough wildlife preserves thousands of endangered species survive.

I do have issues with PETA. The most obvious is "any publicity is good publicity"....some of their attention-getting attics alienates people...this thread happened probably for that reason. Ads of naked celebs, "sex videos" of animals, comparing various cruelty to animals to the Holocaust. I'd prefer more reason - less sensationalism.

Some of the content at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): The animal rights organization | PETA.org is questionable. Linking Why Should Christians be Vegetarians? - Splash page and at one time declaring Jesus was a vegetarian flies in the face of the account of him feeding 5000 with bread and fish....trying to be factual - not theological on that one.

There are many things I could agree with PETA on, but a number of things they are either incorrect or too sensational.

Thank you for your work with neglected and abused animals. :yo:

You say that dogs at your shelter are kept for several months? How do you feel about PETA's policy of euthanizing 84% of the animals entrusted to their care within 24hrs?

You also stated that the shelter you work for is a "kill shelter" could you please let us know what the kill ratio is and let us know if you're comfortable with PETA's 95% kill ratio?

Also, just so that you know both sides of the story HSUS, Humane Society of the United States was exposed not to long ago by the CCF for deceptive fund raising practices.

We have two choices, do or say nothing, blindly adhere to only one side of the story and sweep all questions under the table with false assumptions and made up facts. Your loyalty will be unquestionable but if your loyalty is misplaced and these stories are true, as their own data seems to prove, you'll discover that raising funds are much, much tougher in the future.

A simple solution is to remove the agenda driven officers from these organizations.

I know I'm making headway in a controversial subject when I reduced the other side to making their arguments based on assumptions, making up facts, misrepresenting the points I've made, changing the subject or launching personal attacks. :yo:

Would SOMEONE please point out to me where politics has entered this thread other than the posters making the accusation that this thread is political or contains a political subject?

I'm concerned with their sympathy for the Animal Liberation Front and opposition to a no-kill policy.

They do view keeping pets the same as keeping slaves. So adopting out a homeless pet might be no better than keeping it in a cage in their eyes. With zoos also being a no no, there are only two logical solutions in their belief frame work. Releasing the pets into the wild is cruel since most domestic animals are unable to care for themselves out there, and it would put native species at risk. That leaves euthanasia as the only option.

Unbelievable the deeper I go the more barbaric this organization appears. Reevaluating the weak support I gave them in earlier posts.

As I said earlier the CCF is a hired gun for the fast food, meat, alcohol and tobacco industries. I have seen what they do for several years and I do not trust anything they come up with. I am aware that there are some problems with HSUS. If that kill number is correct for PETA then I would hope that there would be an investigation of that. Needless killing of innocent animals is against everything I stand for with my time, efforts, and contributions.
Over the years my donations to large animal welfare organizations have decreased as my donations to local groups have increased. I do like the Fund for Animals, Farm Sanctuary, and Defenders of Wildlife. Hopefully a rational discussion of topics like this will help homeless animals.
P.S. some of the dogs at the shelter I work at are kept for several months. Due to their lengthy stay these are the ones I tend to bond with. How long an animal is at the shelter depends upon may variables.
The shelter I work at is a county govt shelter and is required to accept all animals. Some other shelters are not govt and can be more selective about which animals they take. This results in different euthanasia numbers for different shelters.

The read on PETA head [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingrid_Newkirk]Ingrid Newkirk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] is also interesting.

"...thinkers may prepare revolutions, but bandits must carry them out." - Newkirk on the Animal Liberation Front

On Formula One racing, which—along with sumo wrestling—remains one of her great passions, according to The New Yorker: "It's sex. The first time you hear them rev their engines, my God! That noise goes straight up my spine." How can you be militantly animal rights, logically go vegan, yet be a racing enthusiast? Biofuels it's argued is destroying habitats for wildlife in Asia - fossil fuels are not good for the climate (at least in the view of most animal rights people.) Of course, someone could checkmate me and say I should not only oppose racing but become vegan....I can't argue against that but at least I fess up to that. I'm also not a militant activitist.
