With all the new electric users coming on line here at PC, maybe we need to define, electric "USE".

In electric mode, if you're getting 3 miles of range per kWh, you're doing ok.
In electric mode, if you're getting 5 miles of range per kWh, you're a true hyper mile'er.

How do you calculate your kWh usage? The truest way is to get a meter so that you're measuring your juice "at the wall". You'll find that for each kWh that passes through your home's kwh meter, you'll have a certain amount of loss.

In other words, you don't get one kWh into the battery, just because your meter shows you were charged for the kWh. It takes more electricity use, then electricity you'll actually get to use in the battery. That juice you pay for to fill the PiP, is sometimes refereed to as your electricity use, "at the wall". When you get a chance, let's see some numbers! How many miles does your PiP get, per kWh, at the wall.

Ok, as John170x says, I think, at fillup (sample) time, can we get ..
    miles driven
    gallons pumped in
total kWHrs pulled from wall during for miles driven.

.... lot more confusing still with 2 energy sources

Am I incorrect in assuming that there will be an approximate scaling value that we will be able to use for those of us not planning on a gauge at the wall? If we know how much the car tells us we have used, and we know the rough loss factor of charging, we should be able to approximate the true wall charge.

I say we should still track the EV usage as reported by the car for later use in evaluation of this data.

are the charging losses the same for everybody, or different due to different facilities?

No, depending of the used EVSE and the main wiring/outlet feeding your J1772 port adapter.
I estimate worst case scenario, not to be more than 10%.

thanks mb, what's the best scenario from panel to outlet to minimize loss? that would be helpful to know for those of us who haven't installed our dedicated circuit yet.

Don't we wish. EPA uses somewhere in the range of 15-20%, I cannot remember the exact figure.

That's right ... and there are other variables changing loss percentage:
    120v versus 240v charging
    charging temps
length of EVSE cord / extension(s)
battery age / number of cycles / easy-hard usage
    etc
But some do experience as low as 10% on occasion

it'll be interesting to see PC member #'s once they get the hang of it

For my normal 33 mile commute (5 miles city, 28 stop and go highway) the trip computer show 96 mpg. The first part of the drive was pure EV, when the car hit the end of the EV threshold it then flipped into Hybrid mode and drove like my old Prius. They reserved battery capacity for the Hybrid mode, so when I was doing stop and go it still was showing 100MPG like our old Prius did....

Do you recall at how many miles it switched from EV to HV?

Is 33 miles one way or round trip? My guess is, it is one way and you used up all the charge on your way to work.

    Can you charge at work?

The 33 miles I drove was one way. The HV Mode kicked in at about 14 miles (4 miles city, 10 freeway) with my average speed on the freeway being probably about 40 to 45 mph. Yes I can charge at work.

I'll report back on the drive home. I should be able to do 65 to 70 mph most of the way home so I am guessing my mpg will go way down.

I wish Toyata had something like the leaf has were all the info could be uploaded to a central database.

    Cheers

Time is overdue, especially on Priuschat, to reference efficiency in distance per Liter (kilometers per Liter), same for EVs, distance per charge.

I drove to work this morning which is about 8.5 miles of city streets and when I got to work it said I had 6 miles range left. The engine did come on a couple times too, i assume, heat the cabin so that may have helped the drivetrain a bit even though it was in EV mode.

Wih Tracksyde on this one, WooHoo indeed. :cheer2:

What was the ~ temperature and amount of stop and go traffic? Any large elevation changes? And did you "work it" to get that number or "just drive?"

Sorry for the questions, but starving for real-world data. :)

When it goes into HV mode, does it drive like a 3rd gen or like your 2nd, or does it drive like a Prius on a few steroids? :D

i would say liter per km/mil and Kwh per km/mile maybe mile per kwh.

Will you be able to charge at work? After the trip back home, can you post a screenshot of the EV/HV ratio screen for Trip A?

What I'd like to know (and maybe I missed it) is if you can choose blending vs HV mode while driving faster than 62MPH.

I'd like to drive 55 or 60 MPH using EV mode, but the users guide recommended not driving at 62MPH in EV mode (and since 55 is close to 62MPH, I will try to avoid 55MPH in EV mode for long periods of time). I don't want to prematurely reduce the charge capacity of my traction battery.
