I was fueling up and this idiot in an F-150 on the other side of the pump made the comment that the high fuel prices were my fault for driving a fuel efficient vehicle. "if it weren't for you and those skate boards gas would be lower because demand would be higher which would push the cost down". I know you can't agrue with an idiot's logic, so I just shruged, finished and left. My first instinct was to say, "if you had the forsight not to buy a gas guzzling pickup you don't need then you wouldn't have to bitch", but you can never tell the state of mind of people so I let it go.

I was completely flabbergasted and still am, what kind of nit-wit comes up with such a hairbrained idea?

He doesn't understand macro economics, because just the opposite is true. As supply increases, prices go down. The more gas guzzlers on the road mean demand would be higher and prices would rise.

Where you can be possibly blamed is for not paying your fair share of the taxes to support the transportation infrastructure.

I wasn't going to go there, but since you opened the door: and an F-150, no less.

Coming from Arizona I feel somewhat qualified to call this out. That could happen here just as easily.

He probably just came from that "Occupy Wall St." protest, that did alot of good. They should be marching in front of their politiciams office instead.

My stock response in that situation is, "Them hunnert-dollar fillups gettin' on yore nerves, boy?"

You just answered it yourself. That's RIGHT, it's YOUR FAULT! Just like it's the robbery victim is at fault for having money to CAUSE the robber to rob!

Why even question it? Seems Mr. Gas Guzzling F-150 got a A+ in economics from University of Idiots for applying his expertise on the Scale of Economy.

Dude... just nod, give him a BIG ol' smile :D , a two thumbs up before you get back into your Prius that you just spent about $35-$40 to fill up.

Kudo's for your calm and reasonable reaction to idiocy.

I would of said something sarcastic about an inability to grasp the simple concept of how supply and demand works. And it probably wouldn't of gone nicely.

Oil is like TVs. The more people buy, the faster the Chinese learn to make them.

Huh? Sorry, I must've missed that one.

    Anyways...

The U.S. has be hording and stockpiling it's own domestic oil supplies for the last half of the century while depending on foreign oil, I suppose for military emergencies and needs. It wouldn't surprise me that by the time those military emergencies and needs actually becomes a full blown reality, most, if not all tanks, planes, etc... will be running off of electricity, hydrogen, or other non-oil based fuel! :p

If this isn't military emergency mode, the US Military used 121 Million barrels of oil in 2011, what will it need in an emergency? That is by the way, about 0.6% of all US reserves (including all known oil in the ground).

Today cost of world crude oil is ~70% of pump price so not too much a Prius driver can do about it. Texas is on the ocean/Gulf so they are open to world price. Nobody saw the growth of China coming, increasing crude oil from $12 in 1998 to ~$112 today. Nobody saw the advances in drilling improving nat gas and oil supplies domestically....there is perhaps a "kernel" of corn truth in this fellow's point of view that we now have the potential to have new oil supplies. But conservation of resources is never a bad thing.

The lower demand has increased the cost of production and delivery - you see this especially in heating oil costs.

We have not built a new refinery inside the USA in over 25 years .. and not that long ago they ran at 100 percent capacity -- many are now closing!. The USA imports refined gasoline ... something that it never did before .... and this is changing the refining schedules.

So the lower demand has an effect ..... I'm not suggesting that we increase oil consumption ......... Unfortunately, we have not been able to take advantage of the increase supply of NG.

Propane costs are through the roof :(

Funny, last December, the news was all over that we were EXPORTing gasoline! Gasoline: The next big U.S. export - Dec. 5, 2011

I'll grant though, that there may be areas of the US (e.g. Northeast) that import gasoline because of distribution problems.

This is all BS. The truth is the Oil Co.'s and speculator's and politicians are just greedy ....they would sell their mother to make a profit. It's funny how milk is regulated so the poor farmer doesn't make a fortune but oil can't be regulated.

P.S. Just like a couple of years ago, the current price of gas at the pump has more to do with the global oil futures market than anything else.
