After an excruciating wait of nearly a week (wife has been out of town), I finally picked up my Plugin tonight. So far it's a lot of fun to drive. Went out to eat after picking it up and drove the whole way (about 6 miles) in EV mode on surface streets. Loved that feeling of not using any gas. Sadly, I had to use HV mode to get home later. Consumption at the end was 63MPG over a 30 mile or so drive. That drive with my 2005 Prius would've been about 40MPG due to the hills in the area.

I am enjoying it. Got 72 MPG getting to work site #2 today. 30.8 miles. Started out with full EV range( 13.2 miles) and ended up with no EV range when I got to work. This commute is usually between 44MPG and 50MPG in the 2005. I'll take that ~50% improvement in MPG, thank you very much.

Sadly, it doesn't appear that I can charge at either work site for the time being. At least not easily.

Coming home I got 50MPG for the trip. Given that the trip home is usually 42 to 44MPG, I'm pretty happy with that result.

The last part of my trip home is down a rather steep but short hill (Sharp Park in Pacifica for Bay Area residents). In the 2005, I would typically start out at the top with 6 or 7 battery bars, and by the time I got about half way down the hill, I would be at 8 bars and the computer would start spinning the engine to drain off excess power. I could cruise for a while on the charge I had built up, but not for very far.

Now, with the Plugin, I started off at the top of the hill with 8 bars already, but no EV range at all. By the time I got to the bottom of the hill, I had 2.2 miles of EV range built up, and was able to cruise in EV mode further than the 2005 would let me, and i didn't need to baby the accelerator. It wasn't until I headed up another short (but steepish hill) that I had to finally drop back into HV mode. I wouldn't have been able to do that in the 2005. The car automagically switched between HV mode and EV mode without me telling it to do so.

Excellent! The bigger lithium pack can regen more.

Thank you SO much for these sorts of anectdotes! I'm not sure how often i'll be able to charge my prius fully so it's nice to know that even if i treat it like a normal prius there are times that I might be able to build up some EV range when there are long hills (there are some hills where my current civic i can force engine off and glide for 6-7 miles).

    Today's numbers are:

To work: 46.2 miles total, 67 MPG, EV at start was 13.2 miles with no EV range left at the end of the drive. EV to HV ratio was 4miles to 41 miles. Fuel saved: 0.2 gallons.

Coming home: 45.5 miles, 64 MPG, EV at start was 13.1 miles with 0.6 left miles at the end. EV to HV ratio was 9 miles to 36 miles. Fuel saved: 0.2 gallons.

Again I started out at the top of Sharp Park Hill with 7 battery bars and by the bttom of the hill, I had regen'd 2 miles of EV range for the rest of the trip home.

Thanks to JeffN I was able to find a place to charge at work (we work at at the same company and he told me where there more outlets), which helped my MPG numbers.

For this commute, I would typically get in the 2005 Prius around 45 getting to work, and 42 coming home. To say that I'm pleased would be an understatement.

Wait, you only got 4 EV miles going to work? It sounds like you started with a full charge. Is the elevation higher from home to work?

Yes, there's decent size hill I have to climb to get to the freeway. No way to avoid it. However, I vaguely recall on Wednesday not needing the ICE going up that hill, so I'm pretty sure it was due to me accidentally starting the ICE as I started out this morning. I think I hit the HV button, which of course forced a whole warmup cycle. The hill is only about 3 miles from the house. So by the time the ICE was warmed up, I was having to climb the hill and I was driving a bit more aggressive up the hill than the day before.

I took a drive in the devprius-mobile this afternoon.

I immediately recognized his description of our funky workplace plugin situation in his posting last night and looked him up in the company employee database. Too funny. :)

As background, I own a 2001 and 2004 Prius but have never gotten around to driving a 3rd gen. I had previously driven a beta 2012 PiP at the U.S. introduction last year in Richmond, CA but that was so brief it was hard to form much of an impression so it was fun to drive the real deal today.

I really liked the PiP's driver display screens even though they are mostly monotone and lower resolution than the full color ones in the Volt. Toyota did a very nice job with the limited display resources. In particular, the instantaneous efficiency feedback gives more satisfying details than the abstract spinning ball in the Volt driver display.

I found the EV mode acceleration perfectly usable, at least up to 40 mph or so but I tend to be a conservative "Prius driver" after more than a decade of training. Overall, I felt "at home" behind the wheel. As I drove the PiP back into the parking lot at work we recognized another new PiP leaving at the end of the day that was being driven by a fellow employee in my own building....

I think I could be happy driving a PiP (especially if I had access to charging at work) but I made a conscious decision a couple of years ago to try something different by getting the Volt with its EV-centricity and farther range and I'm happy I got it.

Late last year I rented a Nissan LEAF for 3 days from Enterprise rent-a-car during a business trip to Portland and had a great time driving it around in Winter-like conditions (20-40F, no snow). I am definitely interested in spending some similar extended quality-time with a PiP sometime soon.

Forgive my PIP ignorance but is it possible for the combustion engine to fully charge the battery back to the full EV range?

I don't believe so. However, given a long enough downhill run, you could easily recharge the battery back up to full via regen. I'll end up testing that on the grapevine in SoCal possibly next week.

It sounds like the blended operation is counted as HV mile. EV mile may look low but your overall gas consumption for the trip was 67 MPG -- better than the commute back home which had 9 EV miles but with 64 MPG consumption.

I think Toyota realized it and put color displays in Prius v and c.

That's quite a perspective coming from a Volt owner. Did you feel a flick of the foot would trigger the gas engine?

Sure, but at lower speeds it wouldn't happen the way I usually drive. At speeds over 40 or so I had the impression that acceleration was weaker and it would be easier to cause the engine to start. I would have to spend a full day driving around in different circumstances to really have a good feel for that, however. Most of my regular commute is along an expressway at 50 mph and I think the PiP would do fine.
