No, the next iPad will be called "the next iPad." Then they will have "the one after that iPad." In the year 2017 "the new iPad" will be the oldest iPad still being supported. By that time there will be:

The new ipad
The next iPad
The one after that iPad
Yet another iPad.
Oh no not another iPad
The good grief another iPad.

After that iPads will be discontinued because everyone will wear contact lenses with heads-up displays in them operated from the computer chip we'll all have implanted in our brain. It will project an image of a keyboard in the air, and sense the movement of our fingers as we type in the air. Eyeball movement will take over the function of mice and trackpads. And the natural eye twitching that we all have will cause the computer chip to go berserk, causing train wrecks and launching the world's nuclear arsenals, putting an end once and for all to the pointless experiment that is the human race.

 

It is going to be confusing for those not following it. iPad 2 may sound newer than New iPad.

 

Will it matter?

At the coffeeshop this evening, I took a look around. 100% of the people there were using some type of electronic device, either a notebook or a tablet.

With market penetration that deep, it's inevitable that the abilities these devices offer pushes everything to the next level... kind of like as hybrids become the norm, the guzzlers simply vanish.

I know several Apple Fanboys, and most of them are calling it the iPad 3. One even said "That's what Steve would have done."

3D is so last year. The other day, I saw a video game that was claiming to be 4D. Not sure how that would work with a tablet or computer. Do they send people out to jump out at you during gameplay (as in the actor interaction with the "4D" amusment park presentations). Oh the marketing!

It's similarly confusing to follow software versions. Adobe products used to be chronological numbers before they went to "CS". You have to look up the latest Intel processor numbers to see if it's really an upgrade or sidegrade to another processor. And with Apple OS X...how are you supposed to know which cat is an upgrade from another cat? Since Apple doesn't want to continue with an understandable number system...they could just assign random animal names to them. Or what about Seasame St characters? I'd save out for Cookie Monster...

In the late 70's I worked a summer job in a bicycle shop. We sold bikes by Fuji and Zebrakenko. Fuji had started with a model called "The Finest". This was followed the next year by "The Newest". Having nowhere to go after that, I believe they went to the S-10.

That's misuse of the term 4D. 4D in media entertainment usually means external influence such as air, water and interactive movements such as D-Box. Is the game gonna slash you when the character in the game gets a knife wound?
The 3D used in todays gaming are computer generated that looks 3D but in 2D display panel. It it's not quite 3D in a sense of objects distinguishable between foreground and background. In a cellphone technology term, it would be called 2.5D. It looks 3D but not quite 3D. A true 3D would have objects visible to the human eye that is either in front of the actual screen or deeper inside the screen. No 2D display panel can offer that. A true 3D may be so last year but the 3D that the iPad can do is so 2 decades ago.
As for naming the product, I think Android has a pretty good marking strategy. Each newer version has names that corresponds to the next alphabet. All the names are dessert related. Gingerbread is newer than Froyo because G is 1 letter higher than F. Cupcake is older than Donut. Ice Cream Sandwich is older than Jelly Bean. Other manufacturers just throw random names in the air. I mean look at HTC. None of their names make sense.
Adobe's CS are in numerical order. Maybe Apple will call next OSX Sea Lion. It could happen. I mean, the OSX beta was named after a freaking bear.

 

Since the 4th dimension is conceptual, the entertainment industry seems to use it haphazardly: whether a D-Box, flight simulator, or actors having ancillary performances in front of a "3D" screen. I'll leave it to you if you want to debate whether stereoscopic images should be considered "3D" or "2.5D". The latest RealD/ETC stereoscopic technologies are certainly better then the previous anaglyph systems that TV sets could support. Holygraphic video is still years down the road. I've seen some presentations of the latest developments of it at Siggraph. Engineers have been able to develop a system that can project several frames in a full 360 degrees. They can also get 24fps....but with regular graphics hardware, the color depth is 4 bit.

My problem with Adobe is that it's then confusing to remember what actual version Photoshop CS5 really is: did the previous Photoshop stop with 6.0 or 7.0? It's even worst for Autodesk: they're making all the products that they've bought "2012" (all released in 2011). I had used Maya, Softimage, and Mudbox all before they were bought by Autodesk. With the iPad, I would prefer Apple to just make up names instead of a limited "the next".

 

stereoscopic "3D" is the real 3D. The best 3D that iPad can do is anaglyph but that's 4 decades old. Computer generated graphics 3D that iPad can do is 2 decades old. As far as I'm concerned, it is still 2D because nothing pops out of the screen. Stereoscopic 3D on the EVO 3D and Optimus 3D will blow anything away because it is true 3D comparable to RealD.

 

First apple product I've ever owned was an iPad 2. I didn't want to pay $500 for it, so managed to finagle it into a Christmas gift. I have never been a big fan of Apple, I think it generally is overpriced.

However, there's no denying that the iPad is at least a generation ahead of everything else out there. And I mean the iPad2, not even counting the new one. It's just a very fine product indeed. I don't know anybody who has one who doesn't think the world of it (I recall a co-worker talking about somebody who didn't use theirs much, the only exception). It has negatives like typing on it, but it's a nice toy. And really it is a toy, it's for surfing the net in front of the TV and playing some silly apps for the most part. But a really nice toy :0

I cannot speak to the camera on the 4S in person or the new ipad but the ipad2's camera is good for a mobile device but not sufficient for real picture taking. if I had to lug around one device it would be the dslr camera, not the ipad. My hope is that's the last dslr we get, though. Some of the newer point and shoot or those small Sonys with the replacement lens (can't remember the name) are the likely future for consumers.

 

I see a bunch of people online complaining about the camera in the iPad... I just scratch my head and say why? The camera's good enough if you have the iPad in your hand and want to take a picture. If it's not already in my hand, though, I'll pull out the phone (which is always on me), and that's going to have at least as good a camera, if not better. If I'm planning on taking pictures, I'll have my DSLR with me, which is better than any phone or tablet camera out there.

So what's the big deal? It's plenty good enough for facetime calls...

 

I don't see much use for a high quality camera on a tablet. It's more useful to have one on a phone.

On the other hand, I don't understand why iPads don't have stereo speakers, at least in landscape mode, to enhance the video watching or even music listening experience.

 

I thought that about the camera in the iPad as well. I still use the iPad one. However, on our last Disney World trip in February we encountered several people shooting photos with the iPad. A lot more than I expected. They were modifying the photos and sending them to friends within seconds of having taken them.

My daughter and I saw a retirement aged couple using Skype to have a conversation with their son in the service overseas. Grandma & Grandpa weren't behind on technology. They were streaming video from several rides.

Maybe when I get the iPad (3rd Generation) I'll shoot photos with it. Personally, until this last trip I always carried a DSLR (Canon a55) as well as my iPhone. Now, I'm starting to use the iPhone more.
