Bit of new info (for me at least).
The OttoNavi uses the UI designed by RoadRover (Manager.exe)
I have installed a different UI (Rav4) into the OttoNavi and it displayed perfectly but it did not control my system. I am guessing it has to do with a different MCU in the OttoNavi units as compared to the MCU in RoadRovers.

But the UI working was a nice start.

    I also found this app:
roadrover - Reverse engineering of RoadRover software and new tool creation - Google Project Hosting

It's a RoadRover UI emulator. This should come in handy for testing new UI's without running to the car after each change.

Yes, we confirmed that earlier: Ottonavi is just a reseller; this unit is a Roadrover unit.
I'm not surprised other UI works; this is a Windows box. It will run anything designed for it.
But of course, communicating with the MCU is a different story; different processor, different firmwares, etc.
In fact even the Ottonavi firmwares they have released seems not to be necessarily compatible between their own units.

I wish I could redo the UI software. I even wrote to them about specs or tools but never got a reply; hence writing my own tool.
But the key here is to be able to crack the communication with the MCU. Without it, that would be useless.
My understanding was that the Google project was meant to precisely reverse engineer the communication with the MCU and not necessarily the UI. Although, I could see it would be useful after IF we can crack also the MCU.
But that's a different ball game here... lots of work I think. But certainly feasible.

Anyway, this is a very cool unit. We can do a lot with it.
They are far more advanced in Europe and Asia in terms of adding software to the unit.
Some people use MioPocket; a gigantic download of apps.
But somes are saying it's too big and difficult to configure.
So earlier, I have found this very interesting link and bought the software ($20) to try it:
    WinCE Patch

It's a subset of the shareware stuff above but packaged really nicely.
Plus lots of extra useful features.
It's running perfect on my unit.
    Here are some shots:

I haven't tried the Wifi yet; too busy with the UI... he he
I will try to make it run this weekend and let you know.
(This unit is keeping me real busy...)

I have been playing around with the Miopocket 4 on my head unit and it is not hard to configure.
It just has a lot of things that u will not need to use but few of the items are very intresting if they work.
it has Opera web browser and wifi capability. I will try with a USB wifi adapter and see if that works. if not then i am going to order a SDIO wifi card and see if it works. Miopocket comes with drivers for some SDIO cards.

Only problem is that since i have a chinese headunit. the messages show up with chinese txt

So instead of redesigning the UI, you went ahead and purchased this patch which led to this amazing beautiful layout with a myriad of applications added?

I leave this thread for a week and so much as been done haha...sorry if i sound like a noob Bulle...just trying to get my UI looking like yours [IMG]

    Sure.
    Well you can get both!

But don't be confused by the iPhoneToday UI!
You can not run your radio or iPod from there...
That's because the original UI (the UI skin or the modified one that we are working on) gives you access to the hardware level of this unit.
Things like Radio, iPos, volume, wheel controls, etc.
You have to keep this; there is no known way of replacing this.

    BUT

it's also running on top of a Windows box.
That means we can add extra software like:
the GPS, the DVD, MP3 reader, etc.

So what I did on my unit is to install this nice little package (extra set of apps) and link it to my current UI via one the customized icon.
(see thread at the beginning to see how that was done for a simple game).

    So that is all. really.

On my unit, when I want to *switch* to the UI of iPhoneToday, I simply touch on the iPhoneToday icon in the old UI which brings me the beautiful screens you saw.
Then you are inside a completely different UI and have access to all the extra apps.
Except of course the radio, iPod, etc.

So basically you can switch back and forth between the two.
    Super easy.

    Clearer?

Well, I did not succeed installing the Wifi patch on top of it.
    I will dig into it...

Well I'm back from a weekend out of town. Got to do lots of driving with the new radio. I really like the Nav better than the factory nav in my '08 Prius.

Here's V002 of my metal theme. The home icons are slightly tweaked plus I've added new screens for iPod & Phone.

Awesome! I tried the previous version too; they really look great.
I just love the embossed; the new bluetooth screen is perfect.

Wow, you're almost done converting all the art!

Hi Bulle. Glad you like it! I've been enjoying it.

I need your help with something. I created a loading screen for the nav. I unzipped the branding.zip, loaded the new screen and zipped it back up but when the nav starts up it defaults to another screen I have not seen. I think it cannot read the zip file which makes me think it's not zipped correctly. Can you give me some pointers?

    Thanks!

Sure. The file you want to change is:
    ui_igo8_da\800_480\loading.bmp
Make sure size is 800x480 with 24 bit.

    Works for me.

Otherwise the problem could be your zip software; try an older version.

So I got my stereo installed and added Clayfree V002..pretty sweet. Thanks a lot. I had to change to 24 hr clock so it wouldn't show the AM/PM letters since the numbers were gone.

I have a question. for some reason it thinks the station KROQ in Los Angeles is an education station while it's an alt/rock station. can that be changed? Actually that doesn't bother me as much as the fact that it says educatioin and not education....can that be fixed?

speaking of changing spellings, can I change the spelling of "dialled" on the phone screen to the american version "dialed"?

I'm not 100% done with the install. the camera I received was too small. Everything is ready to go though...just mount camera and plug it in and then i'll be all done.

    thanks

    jeff in long beach.

    savegas52,
I did not purchase the patch that Bulle got. the one I am using is freeware, got it from GpsPasSion Forums - MioPocket 4.0 (Unlock for GPS devices)

It seems these aftermarket Headunits are all very similar. they have two separate operating systems.
one OS controls the radio , DVD, Bluetooth, reverse cam, AUX input. this is the interface Bulle and others have been tweaking.

The navigation actually runs on windows CE Ver 5 or 6 (depending on the age of your device). when you press GPS button the windows CE
kicks in and runs the navigation software just like running a software on a computer.

All you have to do is get your device to run the miopocket software instead of the navigation software and you get access to the screen with all the fancy icons.

Warning: only do this if you are comfortable with moving around files and testing out new things. you could potentially mess up your device to the point that navigation will not work anymore.

I tried to hookup a usb wifi adapter in windows CE mode but it seems the device only reads the GPS SD slot and dose not see the USB socket. :eek:hwell:

it seems my headunit only recognizes the USB socket when in normal mode. in windows CE the USB does not show up, only GPS SD card can be navigated.

Bulle, when you are in the window CE mode does your device recognize any thumb drive attached to the USB socket. I am talking about the USB input cord from behind the unit not the SD slots from the front of the head unit.

Yes it does! Both of them. They show up as *USB Disk* with a little disk drive icon.

    More info...
It is true that most of the chinese units have 2 CPUs: one for driving hardware and one for navigation. Unfortunately, sometimes, they put the USBs only on the hardware side (what you called *normal mode*). Which means the WinCE side (Navigation, etc) can not access it.
    May be it's your case...

But there may be a fix for you. But it's a hardware mod you need to do.
Look at the wincepatch site I sent earlier; they have instructions on how to achieve this...

    Thanks Bulle,
I did go and check out the site when u first mentioned it and saw the hardware mod but was hopeing not to go that route.
maybe i will look around the web and see if there is any software solution.
I have installed and used IGO8 and IGO primo2 navigation on this unit and they both are nice.. any recomendation for what is a good Navigation software to use on these units?
