Hatchback Weather Seal

    Whenever our dogs jump in or out of the rear cargo area where they ride on car trips, the weather seal pops out when their paws touch the seal. The seal must then be manually reinserted so that the hatchback will close. I presume sliding a heavy object over the seal would cause the same problem.

    The dealer installed a new replacement seal and tried to glue it into place. Not only did the glue not adhere, but the seal was not properly installed and the hatchback must now be slammed in order to engage the latch.

    Anyone else having this problem? If so, I wanted to inform the dealer.

    I think I would try to keep the dogs paws clear of the seal and get the seal fixed by the dealer.

    I believe it was MacPrius who purchased a K&H cargo cover from Amazon that has a flap that covers the bumper area. I use large bath sheets until I can decide what I want long term. Currently my dog rides in the back seat with a seatbelt and pet hammock. (both topics can be found in the accessories and mods.). A pic of the cargo cover is there and I'd be happy to post one of the hammock if you'd like. I did link to the item on eBay. Again there I hang towels down to protect the entry way. (as you can see I'm a little particular ;-) ) I love my dogs but try to protect the car from their nails and such.

    Hope they get it figured out quickly.

    Thanks. I bought and had the dealer install the rear bumper applique on my new Prius V. My 2007 Prius---which I traded-in---got its bumper rather thrashed from the dogs going in and out. I never had any trouble with the weather seal on the 07 Prius nor do I have a problem with the weather seal on our 2011 Lexus 450h when the dogs jump in and out.

    3M makes a special cement for "gluing" the rubber weatherstripping seal to the painted body metal. I used it years, ago, on aanother vehicle, and it had never failed.

    I don't know what the dealer used, but you might check NAPA for the 3M product.

    No problem yet. I have 3 dogs I pick up every day. I will watch out for this possible problem in the future. Only had the car for 2 weeks.

    Put a small rug in the back of the car. Lay it over the seal and bumper before the dogs get in or out. Might be a simple solution that will also help keep the car a bit cleaner.
