So I got my PiP Tuesday March 13th and have been enjoying driving in EV immensely. For where I live it's simply amazing. I wish I would have taken pics Wednesday or wrote down my mileages then but I did something like 60 miles, 90% of which were done in EV since I recharged fully 4 times during the day. I can't even speculate on the numbers but they were quite impressive.

So here's the results from yesterdays trip to and from work. (I took the pic after charging so the range is back up to 12.8)

    Now here's todays trip:

As you can see I did the same avg speed and it clocked in at 1/10th a mile more today. Difference between the 2 days was today i made it home with .9 EV miles left. Yesterday the engine had to come on. The only thing I did different today was kick in HV mode a little earlier while getting on the bridge into Brooklyn and again on the return ride home. Still, with doing that, it shows I was HV mode the same amount of time today as yesterday. It will take a lot of experimentation from us all to find what works best for us, individual commutes etc but overall I am enjoying the car and the results. Oh, and the HUD is an awesome gimmick! :)

    Thanks Len and HillCountry.

I'll be taking a road trip out to Lancaster, PA tomorrow and coming home that night so I'll post how I do on the highway. I'll set out with a full charge, but I'm almost certain I will not be charging anytime after the first ~13 runs out. I want to see how much the battery can recharge while coming down some of the descents...

Here are 2 more quick pics showing stats overall since I got the car.

Congrats! Kept thinking gee doesn't Paradox get his soon? You had it for a couple days. I think quite a few non-PiP owners are gong to turn green with envy :) This is definitely a car to watch, and it's only the 1st gen. Like a super Prius. Hopefully the costs will come down, down over the years and the capabilities will go up and up. Looking forward to road trip results.
    congrats again!

Thanks as well cycledrum! I had the windows tinted light, only 50% so I'll get some pics up soon. It's a nasty day around here today so maybe after it's all washed up again, hopefully Sunday.

Good luck with your new vehicle. I did have one thought. You might want to make sure you take some extended drives in HV to make sure you break your ice in so that it does not break in with just a series of cold start and short runs with little RPM variation. Focusing on initial electric only operation could yield a less than optimal gas engine break in.

oh heck yeah! There's a new type of 'green' owner club - green with envy of those who have the plug-in :drum: I think I'm the founding member :D

I go on short trips and get 40 something MPG. They go on short trips and get 150 MPGs ... I know what some will say ... buy a conversion kit .... no offense, I'm good. ok, enough of muddying the thread.

It sounds great Mark. I wish we could get my windows tinted here in NJ, but it's against the law, and yet I see them all over the place!:)

It's illegal here as well but I still go with 50%. I've had my 2006 and 2010 done 50% and never ran into an issue, and here on SI they do pull over for it...

Bet it looks great with Winter Gray Metallic. I'm looking forward to a picture of it. The four biggest comments I've gotten so far on my PIP ; everyone loves the clear water blue color, the size of the interior of the car, it's lay out and look, and of course the EV drive. It is a space ship (Super Prius) [IMG]

I ordered the standard PiP, and when I tried to change my order to get heads-up and larger display, was told it'd push me back in line... so I stuck with the car I ordered.

Question: is there any way to add a HUD after the fact on the PiP?

    Thanks for the comments all.

I just got back from my trip to Lancaster, PA today and wanted to share the results and things I found out about EV/HV mode and recharging the battery by descending hills and braking at lights when on roads with say 45mph speeds and traffic lights every so often.

First, here's are some photos. These two are just from todays trip before leaving the garage and after pulling back in after the trip:

    And my updated overall stats:

Now, for the interesting info. This may have been posted by others already but I have not had time to read every post lately so here are my findings... I started out leaving the house in EV mode and drove until getting on the Outerbridge Crossing into NJ in EV mode. I then switched over to HV mode. Now, while nearing PA and going down some steep hills I saw my EV distance increase as expected. But then once I hit bottom over a short time my EV range went back to the range it was when I switched over to HV mode, something like 4 miles. After this happened 2 more times I tried something different. When I would go down a hill or had to brake to stop at a light on a one lane roadway I'd switch to EV mode for coasting and if need be final braking. Then, before having to accelerate again, I'd switch back over to HV mode. Doing this preserved EV distance basically stacking it each time I did it. Once up to PA I used EV more for driving around 30mph roads, to the outlets etc. Once I was at .8 miles I stopped using it. Then, when coming home I began the above mentioned tactics again. I was able to go from .8 EV mile range up to 10.4 EV miles range. Once I got over the bridge coming home I ran EV again to my house. I should have switched earlier as I had 3.9 miles left once I got home but this goes to show with little effort you can in fact recharge your battery on a rather short day trip with the right road conditions...

Oh yes, and I also stopped for gas in NJ (first fill up since buying the car) and it took 6.498 gallons for 452.7 miles traveled.

Thanks, Mark. I will try your tactics on my 1,000 mile trip home to the Dallas area from the dealer in Tucson in a couple weeks.
