Hows this work? I have had my car for 2 days, the salesman said I had 3 days to get it insured and let me drive it off the lot and take it home. I was doing comparison shopping in my 72 hours and tonight on the way home I hit a deer. I've never hit anything, and here my brand new car is messed up.

Anybody ever hear of this happening before? What the heck am I supposed to do? Do dealers have some kinda insurance on the cars when you drive them off the lot like that before you insure them?

Did you not have insurance on your previous car? Usually there is a 30 day window of coverage but that may only apply to certain insurance companies.

Tell me you were an insured driver?

If you didn't have insurance before this? You could be in big trouble.

Good Luck. Call your insurance company.

    Once you've bought a vehicle...it's yours.

I've heard rumors of if you have insurance you have X amount of time to "switch" Insurance over...but personally? I'd never drive a vehicle off the lot without being insured.

    Sincerely? Good Luck....

If you were fully insured before (previous car) you will likely be for this one.

Yeah, I was looking over my insurance recently, and remember reading the clause specifically mentioning that a new car could be covered by my existing insurance, as long as a few conditions were met (e.g.: it was paid retroactively back until the purchase of the car, was set up within 30 days, I have no cars insured through other companies, etc.).

If you have an existing policy for an old car, check it out!

Oh, thank you! I didn't know my full coverage carried over for 30 days, after that reply I called insurance and they said the same thing. My comprehensive coverage should cover this and it wont raise my rate either, just pay my $500.00 deductible and pick a body shop.

Now I guess the question is, how do I pick a body shop.. do you ask the dealer who they use, or dont trust em?

I know of a body shop in NJ that has a contract to repair Ferrari's I'm guessing if they are good enough to repair that kinda car, they do high quality work.. would I benefit from going there?

I have State Farm, and they recommend one or more local repair shops. In my case, my local agent knows the local repair shop and has had many satisfied customers use them. You don't have to use the recommended shop(s), but in my case (vandalism), it was easier and more convenient to go with the recommended shop, and the results were great. I paid the deductible to the shop. Make sure they agree to use all brand new, original equipment parts. Because the car is so new, they likely will.

My dealer asked for evidence of insurance when I bought my car, obviously to ensure it'd be carried over.

Are you saying you bought a car and then went comparison shopping afterwards?

It would've been 59 mpg if it wasn't for energy wasted from hitting the deer.

My condolences, Brett - that would probably break my heart. Thankfully you are not hurt, and the car will be covered. Sadly, the deer was not so fortunate.

Please say more about the braking event. Did the brakes not seem to pulse as ABS usually does? You said the wheels locked up; did you get a chance to inspect the skid marks?

I know that my 2012LB has alphabet brakes; I would expect them to pulse in a panic stop.

Can anyone else chime in about this?

The car salesman? And you believed him? :nono: The only one to trust here is your own insurance salesman. The insurance on my other cars allows a somewhat longer period to add new cars, but the coverage won't exceed what I already have. I.e. if the comprehensive and collision has been dropped on the old car(s), it also won't apply to the new one during this gap.
    :flypig:
I have never been able to drive a financed car off the lot without some sort of proof on insurance.

After I got hit two months ago, both insurance companies sent me their lists of preferred area shops, for which they guarantee the work for as long as I own the car. (I can go to any other shop, but won't get that guarantee.) I selected from the overlap, obtained three quotes and some clarifications on their differences, then called my favorite independent mechanic and asked for his ranking of my top choices. He had a very definite opinion.
My Prius does not pulse at the same slow rate as my older ABS car. It works much faster, so I don't usually perceive the pulses.

When I bought my Prius, I had to show proof of insurance as part of the paper work. They said that I have to get coverage within 72 hours for the Prius but my current insurance would cover it in the mean time. Anyways, since you got it taken care of, you're set. The down side is you bought a brand new wrecked car.

Too late now for the wrecked car but I always check stuff like that when getting a new car. If emergency braking doesn't work properly, it goes back to the shop promptly. Ofc. I cannot test the airbags myself but pretty much everything else gets a personal test. That way, I know that the systems work ike they are supposed to. And almost as important, I know how they work in THIS car. :)

Well, the damage isn't terrible it's mostly cosmetic but inside I'm bruised worse I think from having this happen. I'm kinda nervous about driving there now because there are wayyy tooooo many deer in this area and that spot in particular has a deer just waiting to cost you money.

The design of the front of this car made the top of the bumper take the impact and the nice slanted nose threw the deer up in the air minus 1 leg. It missed the car when it landed.

I'm just glad my 3 month old was not with me at the time.
