Statistics can estimate pretty accurately but I've never heard to any dealers north of the border doing this yet...

I thought I saw a black helicopter following me the other day!

Really, who cares? Its not like that is secret info. If Toyota wants to send me coupons or reminders, that just makes my life easier. I'd rather get those in the mail than some solicitations for subscriptions to the NY Times. Put a chip in my OnStar, ETune, or whatever. Just send me those coupons & save me money!

I know people get paranoid about the potential for all this info on us to be put together to show a very detailed picture of our individual lives. Believe me, it's not a giant conspiracy machine like the Death Star, but rather like a ball of independent worms, each with it's own agenda.

And you should believe me, because I'm one of the guys who is in the black helicopter, watching you & gathering info. ;)

Seriously, you wouldn't believe the things that ARE watching you! Do you have an IPass, EZPay, or other toll system? I can track your route & times and see your patterns. Ever drive past an automated plate reader? I can see who's driving your car, and who might be with you. It goes on & on...

The antenna reading the signal must be within a few inches to a few feet from the tag, depending on the size of the antenna. In stores, the posts or paddles next to the doors are the reader antennas. The tag's power comes from the antenna interrogating it. Otherwise, the tag is silent.

Cars out on the public roads cannot be tracked this way without antennas buried in the road or blatantly obvious yagis over the road. Something piggybacking on an otherwise unactivated OnStar system is far more practical, but would legally still require disclosure and a disclosed privacy policy.

I drive so little that with my previous Subaru I had just 3,500 miles on it and was getting letters in the mail "Our records indicate you are due for your 7,500 mile service."

So I took a picture of the odometer, and sent in a letter accompanied by the photo and a list of what is wrong with the car that I needed replaced under warranty. Needless to say, the mileage on the letters changed.
    Haha
