    Sad but somehow unsurprising...

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Unprecedented Investigation Finds Questionable Standardized Test Results Nationwide - PR Newswire - The Sacramento Bee

    A sample of the results:

In addition to Atlanta, the AJC found drastic swings in test scores that were considered virtually impossible in Baltimore, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles and St. Louis.

More than 100 school districts with highly improbable swings in test scores, a finding that strongly points to tampering.

Changes in test scores that were statistically improbable in nearly 20 cities, with swings in scores that were virtually impossible in about a half dozen. According to experts consulted by the AJC, human intervention is the most likely explanation.

In some cities, the AJC found so many dramatic shifts in scores that the odds of that happening by chance are virtually zero.

In cities such as Houston, the results for entire grades of students jumped two, three or more times the amount expected in one year. The next year, when children moved to a new grade, their scores plummeted.

Suspect scores were found in a few districts that have been hailed as cutting edge reformers.

The first part of the findings will be published Sunday, March 25, exclusively in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The story, which also includes a database detailing information from each school district, can be found online at ajc.com.

I was so fed up with the time wasted by the schools with the multiple standardized tests and test prep that I tried to convince my children to get zeros one year alternating with their best efforts the next. They refused, but did tell me that it is common for kids to blow off the test.

Without the teachers "help" post finish of the exams by the students, it appears one school went from 42% to 4% on the 5th grade math portion of the test...

Sad really, to think teachers do this, and let's not dally about why, they do it to keep their schools open {read: money in their pockets)... and most importantly, that there is so many that don't meet a standard that others in a "better" school do, and have proved they can pass in largely majority numbers.

There is more than one problem at each of the schools that have this issue of fraud in the standardized tests... the root causes can be assembled from a rather lengthy list of what ails a system, and are not unique to every school; but, each institution may be unique in the mixture of root causes to this failure, and, their inabilities to correct a number of them either directly or indirectly...

However... INDIVIDUAL MOTIVATION is the largest factor in the success of any student.

How the child is encouraged to want to succeed, to want to learn new things, to take advantage of opportunities and to participate in their personal development so they can become self-sufficient and contribute, in large manner, to the methods and to the ways they can achieve their personal goals... that's what school teachers can't do by themselves... and sadly, that is something many parents have abandoned to the schools.

    Stop the presses--this is news?

One can tell when it's a slow news day for the media. Cheating has been going on since a school administered the very first test, so why does this article get any attention?

My wife is an elementary school teacher and dispises (sp?) the No Child Left Behind program (novel idea but not realistic) and the fact that they are forced to teach for the tests. She is always talking about suspecting certain schools in her district of getting "creative" in order to better their test scores.

But when you place an entire schools annual report card and existence on this standardized testing are we not creating this monster?

When NCLB was first established, each state was asked to set a baseline competency. The 'crats who play the game well set their states at retarded levels, and have been improving and garnering kudos ever since.

While teacher cheating is egregious and illegal, the entire NCLB act has been an exercise in stupidity and (legal) corruption from adults.

Because this was the first time an in-depth research has been done to study the phenomenon on a nationwide scale. The report also provides an interactive database that can be searched by State and School Districts throughout the country so that school officials, educators, parents and anyone who might be interested can find out how well (or poorly) their districts are doing compared to other parts of the state or country. It can also help parents make better informed decisions.
