    I have a 2010 prius. I put in a new stereo system and as part of the process had to disconnect and reconnect the battery. The car drives and the stereo works. However, when I turn the car off and step out of the car with the key fob and shut the door there is one beep in the car and three outside the car and the display reads "key not detected" and it won't let me lock the car with the key fob. It appears to think the car is still running when I leave but it is definitely off. The "key not detected" error message then stays on and will not go off until I go back into the car.

    Does the car or key fob need to go through a reset? Is it something I can do myself or do I need to bring it into Toyota? Please help. I've tried searching for a fix online and checked the manual and even contacted Toyota and haven't found anything that has worked.

    Your Prius is still running, or at least the ECU thinks it is running. This implies one of two things:

    1) The Prius is still running;

    or

    2) You messed up the wiring with your stereo installation.

    Try holding the Power button for about five seconds. This will force a shut down.

    Tried holding the power button down and it didn't do anything.

    Have you tried disconnecting the battery again? That will reset everything.

    Yes and it didn't work. Ended up putting the old stereo back in and everything works fine. It appears that some wiring for the key fob runs through the stereo and there is no input for it on the new stereo. Contacted a local company to see if there is a work around.

    Do you know of anything?

    Ah, that makes sense. I don't know of anything for the Gen III, but perhaps some Gen III owners will chime in.
