OK- maybe I'm just naive; maybe I'm a compulsive worrier; but maybe I'm getting in over my head by buying a PiP. I keep reading posts by new PiP drivers about trying to stay in EV, or the car kicking on the gas in EV or the heater not working right and on and on. This is all starting to scare me. I thought I'm buying a car not too different from my past two Prius - get in and drive 5 miles to work, only not make a donation to Mobil or Exxon; drive home and maybe stop for groceries, still no money for gas; set my car to charge during the wee hours; and start all over again. Now I'm reading all your issues and thinking I need to be a rocket scientist to drive a PiP. My car hits the dealer in the next week or so; maybe I should pass and buy a regular Prius? I'm a simple lawyer who happens to be an early adopter of tech and a lover of the environment, not a rocket scientist who wants to think about driving. HELP!!!

LOL JOZO By pushing the envelope so much information is gained about what the Prius is and could be. All that is openly shared here and if anyone is not comfortable doing that ,just drive your Prius like a regular vehicle and enjoy. Oh and take a deep breath all is well, nice having you here the more on this ride the better.

You will burn some gas; it is not an EV. But it will mostly be EV on your commute. Get the car. I only wish they were for sale here already.

Do computers and smart phones intimidate you as much as the Prius?
There was a time when neither existed and we all survived just fine.
But consider the time, effort, expense, study, trial, error etc that you devoted to letting those two items change the way you do everything.
Despite their quirky and seemingly "not worth it" beginnings.
So why are you intimidated by the Plug in Prius?

Has anyone recouped the money they have spent on PC's in the last 30ish years. Do you remember what a crappy little PC used to cost? What did they really do in the early years compared to what they cost...............not much more than get us here today.

Just drive it, that's all it requires. And if you are so inclined, like many of us, EXPLOIT it's genious capabilities and learn and gain more benefits than any automobile has ever offered before. Just like the previous Prius,

Does the typical person surfing the web right now know or care anything about computers?
But they still have one. And other folks devote there whole life to them. Its gonna be OK

    Just Drive It

This is quite fascinating to hear the same old worries from over a decade ago repeated again.

You read online about the things of us with automotive & engineering background are observing & trying with our cars and become concerned.

Remind yourself that we are the extreme, the few who research every little aspect of the system... quite unlike any ordinary person would do... hence that "Just Drive It" motto we came up with all those years ago.

PHV is no different than the regular Prius when it comes to driving. You just remove the plug and go. That's it. You may toggle out of the default EV if you want, but that's not necessary. HV will automatically engage when needed, then automatically disengage afterward.

It's great that Toyota enabled owners to take advantage of their high flexible design, but not the just slightest bit necessary. However, I think a revision to that motto is now worthwhile:

    Just Plug, Then Drive

I adapted quickly to computers and smart phones and, frighteningly, could not live without my MacBook Pro. BUT there seems to be so much to learn about PiPs - even a whole language. I expected it to take time to learn and program the fun stuff like Entune and Nav (these are toys more meant for passengers, I think) but this whole notion of trying to stay in EV and when the car kicks into ICE - well it reminds me of that scene in "The Right Stuff" (I'm dating myself here) where the astronaut candidates are blowing into a tube on one breath, trying to keep a ball up in the air for as long as possible.

You will be just fine. The car was designed for you. It's not necessary that you know the techie details. We just got our PIP last week. I am typical of folks on pc, while my wife is not a techie. She just just drives it and loves it. You will not be disappointed.

You don't have to do anything special except plug it in. Then drive it and go on with your life like you always have. Having a cellphone requires more of you.

If you chose to come here, these are the thing we talk about. You can go to any enthusiast forum and be overwhelmed with the available info.
And speaking of a new language, nothing has done that more than computers. RAM, ROM, UPLOAD, DOWNLOAD, BIT, BITE, GIG, Network, BLOG, USB,CD,DVD,DISK,FLOPPY,BOOT,JPEG,MPEG,WIFI,WEB. It goes on forever.
Yet ICE and EV and Glide scare you?
No you didn't adapt quickly, if you are over 30 years old. you adapted slowly over 30 years as it was all introduced. As everyone will as these new cars are introduced.

There's nothing new to learn unless you want to understand how it works. There's no need to bother with the EV Mode button at all, ever. And you can ignore the Hybrid System Indicator and you'll still get great mileage. But I'd personally be very unhappy if the car didn't give me the option of viewing the information and pushing some buttons.

Just turn the key and go. Except that you don't have to turn a key.

I love learning all the details.

I also have about a 5 mile ride to work. And yes, the ICE does come on when the car is cold for about 1 mile. But even after my short commute, the car is still telling me that I am averaging 130-150 MPG. That's not too bad.

Soon you're going to ask yourself what all the angst was about! As others have already said very well, just drive the PiP and charge it when it's convenient. If all the info about the buttons is overload for you right now, you can just ignore the EV/HV, Eco, and Power buttons until you get used to the car.

Remember, you do not have to use those buttons, and you'll still enjoy great mileage without the fuss. Later you can explore the best use of those buttons to give you even better mileage/performance. You'll be a pro before you know it!

If you don't want to use any gas, go buy a Leaf, or a Tesla, I think a lawyer can afford that.
The PiP is a hybrid not an EV.

Hah! Thank you to everyone for calming me a bit. I will plug in, un-plug, and drive. I will discover and learn as I go along, and try to view the experience as a journey of discovery. As for buying a Tesla, well, I work for the state, so I'm not able (or willing) to spend that kind of money on a car. I have driven Prius for so long and feel so comfortable with them. I did recently see a Fisker Karma (someone in my age bracket has to love a car named 'Karma' - it's good, right?) and the Karma is an aesthetically stunning vehicle, both inside and out. But, again, way too pricey for my civil servant income. I am grateful to be able and smart enough to buy a PiP. So, I'm taking deep breaths and trying to relax. I'll tackle the tech stuff if and when I feel like it.

LOL stop worrying and enjoy your new car. It's the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. As for the heat issue, I was the one who found the non-problem. All you have to do to keep the heat set to Low and the ICE stays off when you drive short EV hops. That’s it, problem solved. I’m new to the Prius, and it shows….:) With all the help you get here, these guys are better then 100 Toyota manuals, that’s why I ask, they pick it apart then figure out what I didn’t understand. So buy the PIP, if you don’t you’ll be so sorry, I love mine.:D And Guys again as always....Thanks for all your help.

No, that was quite intentional. It's to emphasize that nothing special is needed for electric refueling. You simply plug the car in just like you do for any other portable rechargable electronic device.

Remember, we want to emphasize that an ordinary 120-volt outlet is all that's needed to recharge, just like...
