I own a 2007 Prius with a smart key, the new smart key for my Prius V over rides the older smart key and locks out the 2007 system, you can't open the older car until the new key is removed from the area. Toyoto is aware of the problem, but doesn't seem to care. Their solution is to have the keys on individual chains and kept at least 20 meters apart. In other words leave one key at home when you drive.:(

Same thing happens with my 2011 and a friend's 2010... If their 2010 key is in their pocket while riding in my car, my car doesn't start.

Wrap some aluminum foil around one of the keys :)

    Or use an Altoids case.

I have an 11 and 12. My 11 doesn't bother the 12, but the 12 destroys the 11. My wife has her key in her purse so whenever I drive we have the problem. I sure wish there was a way Toyota could fix this.

You can't expect my wife to have her key wrapped in aluminum foil when it's in her purse.

If I want to start the car she has to take her keys out of her purse and hold it outside the window. If she doesn't do that I can't start the car even when I touch the start button with my fob.

No problem with the 2012 V and the 2006. Just checked with my brothers-in-law and they said it was not an issue.

How about Toyota fixing the problem! What does it say about Toyota engineering when people walk around with foil wrapped over their keys! BTW it only works with heavy foil.

Yep, and the altoids container doesn't work all of the time either. It's absolutely ridiculous. It's like Toyota never conceived a family could have two Prius'.

Actually, I don't believe that to be the case... I think it is more of they probably did not expect a conflict of the two technologies. They may have made an updated SKS system that generates interference signal or incorporated a protection system to try and avoid cloning/dupping attempt, only to make it not consider the other possibility.

Please remember, as much as you like to think companies try to cover all situations, there is always something 'one off' that has not been considered, which happens a lot, not just in cars, but in everything out there.

Since this appears to be a random occurance, not all multiple keys conflict, Toyota should bite the bullet and the whole hybrid vehicle immobilizer system in the older car where the problem exists should be replaced as they define when a replacement key can not be made. Will Toyota be offering after market AL foil and Altoid cans? These are not solutions!

They're not biting anything. I just had a conversation with them. Here is the gist of the conversation.

Me: My 2012 Prius keys are conflicting with my 2011 Prius. Whenever my wife is in my car with her keys in her purse, I cannot start my car unless she physically takes her keys and holds them out of the window. Is there anything we can do about this?

Toyota: "Let me check can you hold for a moment?"

    Me: "sure"

Toyota: "sir if you check in your owners manual you will see a disclaimer we have in there about possible interference."

Me: "So why doesn't my 2011 fob interfere with the 2012, it is only the 2012 that interferes with the 2011"?.

Toyota: "Sir you could have a BMW fob and it could interfere with your car."

Me: Well obviously the 2012 blocks my 2011's frequency in some manner or my key would interfere with her car."

Toyota: "Sir, there is nothing we can do about this issue. If you would like I can send in a request for a change in the car's design.

    Me: ok, do that.

Toyota: Ok would you like the confirmation number?

    Me: Just email it me.

Toyota: we don't have access to email.

Me: Just forget about it. This will be the last toyota I will ever buy.

    Toyota: Thank you for calling.
