I had mine replaced about 20 years ago and I'm happy with the decision. Mercury is poisonous everywhere in the environment, except in people's mouths and in vaccines. These 2 exceptions seem a lot more political than scientific.

Proper removal of mercury fillings requires use of a rubber dam and lots of water. Taking at least 2 grams of vitamin C before and after the procedure helps to limit the damage done by the released mercury vapor.

I find it interesting that my dentist doesn't use his hazmat suit when working on me. Guess my file marks me as not being a mercury hazard. I've seen him in the hallway wearing enough protective gear to qualify for a fire department hazardous response unit.

This is news to me. I've had no trouble with mine in the 45 years it's been in my mouth.

Except that in fillings, it never gets into your body because it's so tightly bound in the amalgam that it cannot get out, and I don't think it's even used in vaccines any more.

The rabid lunatics who foment anti-vaccine propaganda have succeeded in murdering large number of children, as easily-controlled infectious diseases are now spreading, due to the asshat fearmongers spreading stupid lies and convincing ignorant parents to not get their kids vaccinated.

Vaccination saves lived. Only an irresponsible, idiotic parent denies their kids the right to be vaccinated, and such people's stupidity should not be allowed to endanger their children's lives!!!

Vitamin C has absolutely no effect whatsoever on mercury. Really, Rob, I'm constantly amazed by the ideas you come up with.

I've never seen a dentist wearing a hazmat suit, or any other protective gear other than a cloth over his mouth and nose, and rubber (latex?) gloves.

Hey I had the 2nd Root Canal today, It was NOTHING like the last one. When the Doc said "That's it, I am finished", I said really, the last one was a bitch, this one took 10 minutes.
All he said, all teeth are different.
    Have a nice weekend!

I had the shot of Gold T!:D

Try a different dentist. Some dentists are able to do their jobs and create very little pain. Some just have better hands than others.

Since we are sharing random dental stories...

When I was 9 years old, I thought it was a good idea to do "high jump" over my aunt's belt tied to two chairs. On the cement floor. I fell, hit my mouth on the floor and broke an arch off three adult teeth right on the front. I stayed that way for about 5+ more years, with parts of teeth missing and no one made fun of me. It soon became something normal. But, the main tooth wobbled from time and time and I didn't want to brush it since I thought it would fall off. I had dreams about it. When I was around 15, my dentist (also an aunt) did a root canal and put a crown. The tooth is dead, so no anesthesia. All this for free of course (in Sri Lanka).

I replaced the crown 8 more years later and got another root canal done. Two years ago my dentist here (Columbus) decided to put crowns for the other two teeth (edges of the broken arch) because I was about to go home for our wedding. That cost me more than the previous two crowns and two root canals, even with insurance.

    Random teeth story over.

Good summary. Of course, since that dentist only does composite, the disadvantages of composite were not mentioned, such as that it is more difficult to install properly, so the job is more likely to be done wrong.

I'd definitely go with composite if I needed a new filling, after making sure the dentist had good references. But I would never have my amalgam filling removed unless there was something wrong with it, just out of fear of the minuscule amount of mercury, or concern about esthetics.

Several aspects of vitamin C that are not commonly known are that it can be used to avoid pain and that it is antiviral. The major disadvantage of it is that it is too cheap to maintain an effective lobby. Perhaps when our medical system totally melts down it will be rediscovered.

I learned most of what I know about vitamin C from Dr. Robert Cathcart. He was honored by the Orthomolecular Society as described at Orthomolecular.org - 2008 Hall Of Fame. Linus Pauling is of course the most famous scientist dealing with the medical effects of vitamin C.

The website Welcome To Orthomolecular.org is a major resource for data on vitamin C and other therapies using natural materials.

I got three of my wisdom teeth pulled a few weeks back. I hate getting put under so I just got a local and got those suckers yanked out. Then spent then next few days on the couch just me, the remote, and a bottle of opiates. Mmmmmmmmm opiates. Better living through modern chemistry.

^ I've never had oral opiates, but I had morphine after surgery once. Boy, that stuff is nice!

I finished off the vicodin in three days... after that, didn't really bother me much... I still don't try to move food over the space right now, and I am chewing all the hard stuff on the other side of my mouth, but on the 18th, I get a permanent crown on the one that had the root canal.

Personally, I am a bit phobic about having hands in my face... I do appreciate the gas. :D

I don't mind the hands. It's the pain I hate. If I had my druthers, I'd be under total anesthesia for the procedure, and morphine until the damage was all healed. :music:
