Sounds like the way to win him over to a hybrid is to have him look at the Volt.

He hates Prius, so with a Volt he could brag to his coworkers how he gets "much" better mileage and has a bigger, American-made car than their wimpy Prius. Of course, we all know the truth about the Volt, and that the mileage advantage disappears once you start driving it on trips of several hours. But it's bragging rights he wants, and the Volt would allow him to have that, along with the illusion that he was "right".

Don't worry, the Volt's a nice car & you'd still be welcome in the hybrid club.

You could probably find a dealer demo for a substantial discount, bringing it closer to the Prius 4 price.

You need to hold out for the car you want. Show him the safety and reliability info from Consumer Reports.

And maybe point out that it will give him something to complain about for years. :D

Take him for a test ride and make sure the "Power" button is pressed for drive mode. He'll love the Prius. The 2012 Prius has a much sportier look than the Camry, not the unmanly (excuse my French) look of the pre-2010 Prius. Let him bling it up with some chrome and hot wheels.

His points HAD merit. It's not your grandfather's Prius any more.

I'll weigh in on the Volt side.. (since I choose it :) If one want to feel accelaration, a Volt in Sport mode is great.

The efficiency depends very much on your travel patterns. Yes the Prius is better on long trips, but if its used daily the Volt is will use far less gas. It taks a lot of trips at 50mpg vs 40MPG for the prius to catch up. Voltstats.net has real data over nearly 5 million miles and an average of 120MPG. Fulley has 50 for regular 2012 prius and 55 for Plug-in-Prius.
Less than 2% of the volt drivers on voltstats.net have 55 or lower lifetime.

To the Op.. if you go to test drive a Volt make sure they have it charged or put it in mountainMode and let it sit a bit so you can drive it in EV.
And if you do have him drive it, put it in sport mode and L, that is the most fund way to drive.

While I love the volt, and expect many drivers will prefer its power to a prius, I'll also go with the crowd that is saying if its your car, its your car and stand your ground. People buy cars for all kinds of reasons and if you really really prefer the prius, don't give in. If you are just seeking fuel efficiency, consider an PHEV or BEV which are more fuel efficient. Think of running you car on the Nebraska winds..

Strange, I have been held up by more "manly men" in trucks and SUVs than people in Prii.

Don't get me started on mini-vans.

Make him jealous. Get close to his male co-worker who has a Prius. ;)

"I'd love to see your Prius. Do you think it would fit in my garage?"

Just make sure you articulate clearly. :eyebrows:

I've been laughing for pages. This board is full of evil geniuses! I love it!

Actually, acting like I'm getting interested in the Chevy Volt might be a really fast way to sway him to accept me driving a Prius. He vehemently objects to the Volt over its federal government ties and the ties that GM had to the government as well. So if I start flirting with the Volt, then the Prius might start looking mighty fine to him in a hurry.

That Ford Fusion looks to be a gorgeous car from the outside. Will have to do some more reading about it. But today on the drive home I passed a two Prius and they were real head-turners in my eyes. I'm slightly smitten.

On long drives I tend to do the brunt of the driving. Locally if we're in the same vehicle I do 100% of it (unless he's dropping me off somewhere). After he lost control of a vehicle at 60 mph and ended up rolling laterally across FOUR lanes   of interstate 80 in Omaha going BACKWARDS   (thank God the other drivers observed and were able to avoid the careening vehicle) I decided that we are safer if I am at the wheel.

Today I remembered one of the points he raised about the type of car he was interested in. He said that he liked stick shifts, and that they were "fun" to drive.

Both the project truck and the farm truck have manual transmissions, and though a manual might be fun to drive, they have long ceased to have any advantage over automatics in fuel economy. So now they seem rather a luxury.

I think it's one of his male status concerns. Perhaps the black RAV4 isn't manly and stately enough, and not plush enough for his status as #2 in the office. The RAV4 is a good, basic transportation, but it's the base model and doesn't have leather seats, moonroof, or the midlife crisis sporty look.

Tomorrow I'll add the Chevy Volt to my spreadsheets comparing the Civic CNG, Prius, and hybrid Camry, and find a Chevy dealership to start discussions. After all, a thorough analysis really should include the Volt! :D

Perhaps gently encouraging him to make the hobby truck a priority and get it on the road will help him fulfill his desirements with vehicles. It's a '51 Ford F1 if that means anything to anyone. They don't look pretty to me, but if it'll make him happy (and let me get a Prius), then I'm happy!

Ford seems to be gaiming the EPA a bit too much for the fuel economy numbers of their hybrids. Expect to see fuel economy being the same as Hybrid Camry, not Prius level.

Good Lord... Your husband hates the Prius AND the Volt? I would LOVE to hear what he thinks of the Leaf... Some Japanese Communist Plot maybe? I would show him the Magnetic Gray/Black Prius v and Prius. Both of them are pretty good.

He's really only unfavorable towards the Prius. He HATES the Volt.

So tonight when he called in from his business trip I suggested that we go try out a Volt, "because I'd heard that the acceleration is quite a bit better than the Prius."

He responded saying that while he'd not be caught dead driving a Prius, he would cut of his arm and other appendages before he even SAT in a Volt.

The Prius is looking more probable already! Thank you for the idea, ghosteh and drinnovation!

Actually, they recommended the Volt cause they OWN one and have no problems with it.

Wow... Seriously, your husband has much rage... Is he Sith? Related to Oscar the Grouch? Did he cheer for the Grinch before he went good?

Maybe he was a bond holder in GM.. they be very very angry folk, and rightfully so. I don't begrudge anyone that hates GM and hence won't tough the volt.. does not make the volt a bad car, but they cannot feel comfortable giving money to GM.. ever.

OP: if you think he might hate the Leaf, add it too. And maybe add the Plug-in Prius (which makes the regular Prius seem like a good deal). Stick in the Telsa-S and you have a very green mix from which the Prius wil likely emerge as the best choice.

Don't negotiate to what you want negotiate well beyond it, so what you really want seems like a compromise.

Dead (Prius) vs. a few cuts (Volt). Sounds like the Volt is the winner.

Tell him that it is your patriotic duty to buy American (he sounds like the basic combat radio, Ted Nugent kind of guy) and you must get the Volt...and where does he want you to start cutting.

I suspect he really wants you to get the Prius and then he is going to hide behind you ("It's the wife's car guys, me I wanted a Hummer like Arnold") and then go to secret tree hugger ceremonies when the militia meetings are over.

Boy... I wonder what it is with people and not understanding certain things...

Being caught Dead is not as bad as wanting to cut off your limbs just being in it in general.

I've read about bumper stickers that show a kid peeing on OPEC. Get one of those, and also find or make a sticker that shows a grown man kissing OPEC's arse.

What? Dead vs. one arm and an appendage to be named later. Depending on his age the arm and the appendage may not be working as well together as they used to.

Dead in a Prius or Bonic man in a Volt...come on, man!

He still be alive in the Prius, with limbs... I think he rather lose limbs before you let him sit IN a Volt.
