Wanting to hit the panic button!

    This is very true. When I was picking up my car, I saw them prepping other cars with the car running. I kept thinking to myself, why did the car wash guy let the car run while he was washing it. I'm guessing its all part of the prep.. maybe something to do with making sure the 12V battery is charged up.

    In nromal mode driving, this is, no power condition light on, I got real bad mileage, low 40's. In my normal driving mode, ECO, I get about 47.5. I'm trying Power mode now. These are based on gal/miles driven. I also got bad mileage using med grade 89oct gas. Back to 87oct.

    Haha, yeah I saw a lot more of them the week-2 weeks before I actually bought mine. I see them pretty frequently still but too much. :D Still loving my Prius! And especially loving the tints on my car! :D

    When you shut off the car, it will tell you how you did on the current trip. That can be most enlightening when trying to figure out whether you are playing the game right.

    This is a new feature on the 2012s. Prior years don't have it.

    Also, for those of us living in hilly areas, single trip segments have seriously corrupted MPGs due to elevation changes. Even 4 feet of elevation change per mile will change an otherwise 50 mpg route to 51 (downhill) or 49 (uphill). Round trip numbers are more meaningful, so resetting the Trip meter at a common location (or elevation) helps.

    You need to do better than 55mpg (calculated) to get 600 miles to the tank. Also note what Toyota and Ford use as a reserve (i.e. when does the Low Fuel light come on for Ford? Toyota does it when there's 10 litres left). Also, the 15 litre difference in tank size make a huge difference.

    You can get the same distance to a tank in Prius and Fusion but the difference is that the Prius is more efficient because it used to less to get the same distance. Were you expecting a longer range? If so, then what you wanted was a bigger tank (i.e. a Passat TDI or a Camry Hybrid can do over 620 miles to the tank because of their large capacity).

    The temperature seems about right for good mileage (not too cold or too warm to require the heat or A/C) and at 70mph, you should be around 47mpg to start. (until the car and tyres break in). I would avoid idling the car at the start. Just drive it gently at the start.

    Also, given everything, you were able to bring it up from 16.7 to 42.9 which means you're doing better than 43mpg to bring that average up. I would take the first tank with a grain of salt. At 16.7mpg, there must've been a lot of idling as the dealer inspected the car for delivery.

    The Commonwealth of Virginia Medical Examiner (Kay Scarpetta?) drives a Prius. Saw it on VA-288 a couple of weeks ago.

    You have not mention any driving modes you are using - eco, normal or power mode. During my break in period, I had less MPG. After 1K mile, my MPG got better and better now averaging 55 MPG using eco mode all the time.
