I'm (hopefully) only about a week away from purchasing a Black Sand Pearl Prius C 3, and at these last few days in the dark ages, I'm wondering what other cars people checked out before deciding on the C? I've only really found the Ford Focus(5-door) to be compelling enough to consider, but I don't think it will win me over.
I'm trading in my 2004 Jeep Liberty, so I'm expecting quite a different vehicle, and REALLY looking forward to approximately 3 times the gas mileage :). I've been reading these forums non stop and can't wait to be a part of the community!

Hi Zach! I was actually deciding between a Nissan Rogue and the Prius c.... Lots of options and much much better gas mileage along with better resale value in the Prius for the same price as a more scaled down Rogue is what swayed me. I haven't got mine yet but I have no doubts that I will be glad that I went the way I did. Especially when I only have to go to the gas station every three weeks :)

I was also looking at the Focus but I got the C3. Here is why. I found a website called Focusfanatics.com After looking around I found a thread that scared the crap out of me. It seems there is a huge problem with the transmissions and the thread just goes on and on about how bad it is and how Ford does nothing to help. It scared me off. I spoke to a dealer and he denied it...then I spoke to a service guy who says its a big problem that they are not figuring out how to fix yet.

After just driving my first Prius 100K with any issues except a headlight replacement, I went back to the Toyota dealer....and quickly. I was so close to getting the Ford...Im glad I found that thread.

Also, the My ford Touch system is pretty wacky. Entune isn't much better but who the hell is going to check stocks and sports scores while they are driving. Thats just BS for show anyways.

Also...the Focus really gets about 35mpg max. Thats a joke. MY C3 just got 71mpg on a whole day of running errands.

Thanks for the response :). That's a sweet looking car M, making me impatient!

Mitch, that's great to know about the Focus's transmission, and it reinforces what I had heard about the Ford my touch. The mileage didn't sound so big on paper, 46 on the highway for the Prius and 40 for the focus, but the more I read, the more the Prius seems to exceed those estimates, and how everything else can barely measure up to the sticker on their windows. With the 3, can you adjust the armrest on the center console? I saw some conflicting information in some of the posts.

they are not even close in real world driving. more like a 20mpg difference. that alone would be a significant factor.

Though we only have a "lowly" 2, the center armest can slide forwards a little ways. Makes it harder to open the storage compartment, and it isn't nearly high or long enough to suit my needs, but it does at least give my elbow something to rest on while holding onto the shifter.

We have not looked at anything else outside of my stroll through the International Auto Show. Nothing stacks up. Period. At nearly 90,000 miles we have replaced one headlight and have had the oil changed at specified intervals. There was no reason to consider anything except which model of the C we'll purchase and I'm reasonably settled on the C2. I'll make a down payment to keep the cost below $20K, have some customization performed (hand pin stripping etc) and will be happy to own a second Prius!

I was thinking about going for american made Ford Focus.
The mpg was nice at the time.

Needless to say, I found this forum after seeing the Prius C started under $20k

Then I read here for a week and bought the C
2 weeks later, I bought the Prius 3 gen for a second "family" car.

    Loving every minute of it.

funny I also had my eye on a new Focus hatchback but was really turned off by the service dept at my local Ford dealer after hearing horror stories from co-workers. Apparently they are quite arrogant and not very communicative.

Not long after that I stumbled on an article about the C and became enamored. Test drove it on a whim and that was all it took!

That's about where I am. I have only test driven the Prius, but i've been amazed by it since I saw the Aqua Concept photos. I wish they had kept a bit more of the aggressive styling, but I haven't had anything else really stack up since. My Jeep needs some significant repairs this year, as it did last year, and the year before, so instead of continuing to pay into that, I figured I'd feel better if the repair bill went towards a down payment for something that wasn't going to keep costing me :)

I have the C TWO in Black Sand Pearl and have been really happy with it and it's mileage

    I checked out:
    1. Chevy Volt: Way too expensive!! $45K Liked the concept of pretty much telling OPEC where to stick it though. How much gas could a generator use?
    2. Nissan Leaf: Not enough Range. But the same OPEC concept here too...even better!
The Prius was the only hybrid I checked out. My brother in law is connected with Toyota and he made a comment that I took to heart...They've been doing hybrids for 10 or 12 years. They should have the bugs out by now.
