Sounds like you are willing to pay more for your car if the dealership is throwing a higher number at you. I agree the salesman have to earn a living, but as a consumer, I would think you'd try to spend the least amount and look for the best deal available.

    Unfortunately, no.

That dealership had somehow double-booked the car (I suspect that since they knew that its identical twin was being built in Japan, they sold it to the buyer they had in the building and put my name on the car that was coming).

I'm a wee bit miffed, but so long as it works out in the long run I'm happier to support a dealership that is straight on price. It would have been a bear for me to try to get up there this week anyhow since it is finals week for me.

The local dealership (the one that had offered $500 off after insisting that they only sold these at MSRP) finally sold that car that the salesman told me would be gone in 24 hours. It only took them two full weeks. :p

Things might change as gas prices seem to headed down from the fears of $5 a gallon.

But in the end we have a problem with folks in the internet age and big box stores that things need to be cheap and at the lowest cost. At sticker the 2012 P2 has 5.8% margin. Is this too much? Any money on the backend is what keeps the doors open for the B&M. No wonder we here stories like mine of sleazy deals and bad trade ins.

I work in retail (photographic industry), so I have first hand knowledge on just how much consumers can cheap out. I was distressed that I was forced by Koons Toyota to take my business 50 miles away. Back in 1999 I learned first hand in having a relationship with a car dealer. My ex bought a VW Cabrio, and me a few months later a New Beetle. Had issues with the Beetle, but the dealer worked with VOA to extend the warranty because of the issues I had. Because of that I ended up getting my Baja from them.

Doubt that doing service from a more local dealer will get me the same treatment....
