I was driving 65 mph along the freeway when all of a sudden I felt a huge knock under my car, and I saw a puff of smoke out of the back window. I pulled the car over and I am leaking oil somewhere along the passenger side of the car. There wasn't anything in the road in front of me so the only thing i can think of is something came from the lane beside me and shot over.

Anyway I got it to the dealer, and they gave me a brand new car to take home which I thought was very nice of them.

I will get the scoop of what the problem is tomorrow.

    Wow!

Please make sure to let us know next week when they figure out what it was! It's intriguing.

Good thing you pulled over and stopped the car. Some people keep driving until the engine is out of oil. :(

Had the same thing happen to me except it was not in a Prius and it pierced the gas tank.

    Probably punctured the oil pan.

It really scared the hell out of me. It felt like it hit near the right rear of the car by the batteries. When I saw the puff of white smoke I thought I punctured the battery pack, and I stopped to make sure the car wasn't about to blow up.

Also, the car shouldn't be at the dealer as it's an insurance claim. You should be out only your (cheaper) comprehensive deductible rather than the $$$ at the dealer.

You lost me there. What is the difference where the car is? If it covered by warranty Toyota will take care of it, and if not, my insurance company will take care of it if it warrants a claim. What am I missing?

+1. The adjuster can visit the dealer to inspect the vehicle. That is not a problem.

Got it. I thought you were trying to repair it out of pocket. It's obviously not a warranty claim.

Well they just called me. They said there is absolutely nothing wrong with my car. There is oil on the bottom of the car plastic panels, but none of it is mine.

I am really miffed by this because I swear there was nobody in front of me and nothing in the road. There were only people along side of me and behind me.

    Good to hear.

Hit something big and invisible with the Tacoma the other night. Must have been a lump of coal or shale laying on the asphalt. No damage either.

Anybody ever leave a bottle of oil under the hood after an oil change? Smoking oil everywhere what a mess. Yes I have a sign.

Believe me I know what that sounds like. I had a brand new 1980 delta 88 that I decided to drive to Vegas from Ft Worth. About 20 miles from Tumcumcari, New Mexico the car threw a rod. It had less than 1000 miles on it.

Long story short I had to take a bus to Albuquerque so I could rent a car to finish the trip. It took them 2 months to fix my car, and then I had to wait for someone to drive it to me. It was a company car otherwise I would have found a way to go get it.

We don't really know nothing' until the vehicle is examined and the root cause is identified.

Until then, everyone is just guessing.

Strange. I guess the road debris had oil on it and it got transferred to your car.

Insurance told me that road debris claims are actually pretty common but I'm glad your car is intact.

The oil was clean though, that is why I thought it was from my car. It's really like someone left a container of oil in the engine compartment and then one day it just fell out. This doesn't make much sense either, as I have not changed the oil yet. I assume the car is filled with oil at the factory so there was no need to fill again in make ready when I purchased the car. I did have a 5000 mile tire rotation and fluid check. Maybe the dealer left a partial container, and it just happened to fall out yesterday. I don't know, I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that I didn't run over anything.
