hmmm, let's see. Flash is still alive and kicking. Android supports both flash and HTML5 while ipad only supports the latter. iPad can't view 100% of the sites while Android can. True, Flash may be on its way out but it won't happen over night or over month. Hell, it'll still be here 2 years from now. Apple released the iphone 5 years ago without flash support b/c they think Flash will die soon. 5 years later, flash is still used in almost every site I goto. Every site with animation or video is flash based. I'd rather use something that can support every type of video instead of locked down to only 1.

Yes, What you see on a desk top PC is what you see on the tablet and phone. Best example is youtube.com It goes to mobile site first. Clicking on a video will open up a video player or a youtube player depending on how you setup your phone. It works just like the iphone. Scroll to the bottom there's a "Desktop" button to goto the full site. Once in desktop mode, the embedded video will play like a normal desktop browser with sound.

Regarding the above scenario w/YouTube on my iPad 2, the videos can play embedded on the YouTube site and I can tap on a button to get them to play full screen.

I've been browsing with my iPhone since day 1, and my iPad even more since I got it in March. I have yet to come across a single site where I regretted not having Flash. You Apple-haters can throw around as many statistics as you want, but more people are having experiences like mine than not. That may be why Apple is capturing 75% of mobile phone profits, and why Apple controls 68% of the tablet market.

I wasn't aware the Asus had a retina display.

    Oh wait, never mind.

It has a display that is just a crisp and clear as the retina. Is it woth an extra $100 for the display to be called "retina"? Nope. Will people pay the extra $100 for the apple to be printed on the case? Yup.

I wasn't aware that apple gouges its customers for the same tech that can be purchased cheaper elsewhere.

    Oh wait, nevermind.

    Really?

    Asus: 10.1", 1280x800
    "New" iPad: 9.7", 2048x1536

So... relatively similar screen sizes, yet Apple has almost double the resolution, and you're calling it equivalent? :loco:

That is Paranoia's version of 'extreme rhetoric.'

If he was actually trying to compare similar devices he would compare the Asus to the G2 iPad; but then he would find his cost argument was wrong.

Non-apple folk have been playing this game for years. When Apple advances tech they in one way or another say "I don't want it," and then when the copycats finally copy the meme changes to "sure it is nice/great, we have it too."

    LOL

No rhetoric here. It is just like 720 vs 1080 hd. Most people can't tell the difference. I can't. And I can't see any difference in the display that justifies paying an extra $100

    LOL

    Link to "most people" ?
The reviewers certainly can. In pictures by color fidelity, and in text by clarity.

Why are you comparing the Asus to the iPad3 rather than the iPad2 ?

The ability to dock to a keyboard which doubles battery life is something I would find useful. I would have to get a macbook air for that, and they are way too expensive.

I have an iPad, and 'dock' an external keyboard to it using bluetooth. Works great. Using the KB on an 'air does not improve battery life ;)

But using the keyboard on the asus does. And its half the price. If I get a separate bluetooth keyboard, then I have to worry about its battery, as well as reducing the battery on the tablet because bluetooth is on.

It also adds a cable, and ties you to an outlet. I think you are missing the point of tablets.

No it doesn't. The keyboard attaches to the tablet and it becomes a thin notebook.

Actually the "new" iPad has ~3x the resolution of the said Asus tablet. You can't just look at the horizontal and vertical dimensions individually.

I know right. I'm stating why the asus works best for me, which was what I thought the point of this thread was... not which is "better"

For what I use it for (email, office docs, 2d websites) mega resolution doesn't matter. I won't be painting pictures or watching blu rays on the thing.

youtube may have been a bad choice of example as everything on youtube is html5 when browsed on a mobile device. try RedBalcony The only thing I can't get to work is video. The intro page and the games work. I believe they are flash base.
    TF700T is 1920X1200, A700/A710 is 1920X1080
They don't call it Retina Display because Apple already trademarked the hell out of it.
iPad3 has 265 DPI while the Asus Transformer Infinity TF700T has 224 DPI At those dots per inch on a 10" display, you can't tell the difference unless they are put under a microscope.
Actually, Apple has been using the same UI since 2007 while Android and other OS have improved their UI since their introduction. Apple really hasn't advance anything except taook what already existed and made it idiot proof. Notifications have already existed since Windows Mobile days yet once Apple implemented in iOS5 all of the sudden it's a new technology? Facetime is not new but once it's implemented in iPhone4 and apple fans go wild. Video calls have already existed in other parts of the world LONG before the first iphone even announced.

Reviewers put the display under the microscope so yeah, they can tell the difference. Putting 2 devices side by side yes, they can.
Docking the Asus to its keyboard doesn't add any cables. Once it's docked, it looks similar to the Air.

Every argument made against the ipad there's always a comeback of well, ipad dominates the tablet market. For most people, ipad will do just fine. If it can't it, people just accept it. When a family member got frustrated transferring and sorting thousands of pictures from the iphone to a PC, she yells and screams at her phone. When she saw how easy it was transferring and sorting the pictures on my phone, she just said it's my iphone, I'll live with it. For me, I can't settle for something that can't do what I want. ipad can't do what I want.

Youtube only *relatively* recently switched from Flash to HTML5: I am sure there are plenty of other examples of sites that are still using Flash. For those internet surfers that are Apple fans, though, there are apps that will let you view those Flash presentations. I think demand is a mother of all necessity. Another popular streaming format is Microsoft Silverlight: a development standard that supports WMV and MPEG4 standards as well as Microsoft interactive APIs. When Netflix first offered streaming with Microsoft Silverlight, only PCs running IE were the main platform that wouldn't have problems with compatibility. Now Netflix apps supporting Silverpoint are in most every BD player, HDTV, and even iOS platforms.

As for the recent flames over iPad vs others....there seems to be pluses and minuses with all of them. The latest iPad 3 is nice: a large resolution display and decent battery life for viewing HD videos while traveling (as well as *finally* 4G support). It seems the Asus and Samsung Galaxy also score points for having fast processors, more I/O ports, and a popular OS (as oposed to WebOS, or the yet introduced Windows 8 mobile platform). I currently use my smartphone, iPod Touch, or small laptop for mobile needs. I also have an e-ink ereader for reading books. Getting a tablet would be a superfluous convenience for me: I'm neither an Apple fanboy or hater. I do like my iPod for a general audio anywhere/ video while flying device. The main thing I'd cite Apple with is how proprietary they like to lean towards. My earlier generation iPod is not recognized as an external storage device...I can't back it up if my synced iTunes is lost. The other advantages of other platforms is external memory and mini-HDMI output. If I were to get a tablet for traveling, HDMI output would be a nice option. iPad 3 can have 720P video output with a A/V adaptor (just like their laptops which also require adaptors). The latest Android tablets have mini-HDMI output with 1080P video. If you want an all in one tablet, then the latest iPad is a very strong option. If you're looking for a portable multimedia device with more expandability options (with microSD and HDMI output), then an Android tablet offers good options. I for one appreciate that while the iPad is a very popular tablet, it's not a running monopoly. Having open ended competition, IMO, is making Apple not be so tied with being all inclusive to iTunes.

    *edit*
It's also just as well...I think Retina is a pretty bad term for a high density LCD screen. An organic retina from an eye is much different then any display technology.
