I have Iphone 4 and a 2012 prius 4. One time I noticed I could tell it to play an artist or an album. Now that choice does not come up. What do I need to do?

    Scream at the car :p

Are other functions working so you know that it is communicating with the phone?

I believe that you can only browse album/artists when you are connected via the USB cable and not just through Bluetooth. I could be wrong though.

I know those both work with iPod thru USB. I have not tried with my iPhone 4.

DMN and Big Steve are correct.. You have to be connected thru the cable to get these features, as well as being able to see the album artwork. Sound quality is better when using the cable also.

Apparently if configured properly, iphone users can ask their phone if it's raining outside. They can also find a place to order tomato soup and have their phone remind them that they live in a pigsty.

I was using BT on my phone, but wanted the extra features of the cable like artwork, and browsing the music on the touchscreen so I bought a dedicated 160 gig ipod to hide in the center armrest. However, I immediately noticed that the ipod crashes and resets on a regular basis. Randomly the ipod resets every 20 or 30 tracks at the point it's transferring the artwork to the head unit. Annoying at best. I turned off the artwork display in the car, and so far no crashes, but would like to get it to work if possible.

To try to fix this I'm reformatting all the artwork in my mp3's to all conform to a 300x300 format as all of my current cover art are random sizes and not all were exactly 1:1 square. Hopefully this fixes the crash issues. I'll re-sync my music tonight and see if I get crashes tomorrow morning.

iphone 4 in 2012 Prius4 works mostly ok here. Ipod function works
well over USB which is what I use mostly. I can browse album/artists/playlists for music. My video playlists don't show up
    for browsing/playback however.
    No crashes so far.

Didn't work. My ipod (160 gig classic) is still crashing when transferring the cover art. Anyone else have this problem?

I guess I can try smaller cover art images, but I'm guessing this will not fix the issue. I have an apple store not to far from me, I think I'll stop by there and see if they can diagnose the resets.

Apple store had nothing useful to say about the issue. Not their fault is about all I could gather. I agreed to a futile reformat of the device, but as I suspected it didn't help.

I also tried setting all my cover art to 100x100 (1/9th the size I had originally tried) and I still get crashes. Oh well I guess the newest 160gig ipod classic isn't robust enough to deal with communicating cover art to the head unit so I'll have to do without. I'll mark that off as another "feature" I can't use with this nav (though I blame apple more for this one)...

I have an iPod classic which lives in my console connected via USB, and it has no problem displaying cover art. I know that's not helpful for your particular situation, but it does show that it's possible.

Yes, that's correct. It works like a charm.

I had an old 1st-gen iPod Touch before I got the Classic, and it worked too with no problem.

One question: Do you travel on a lot of rough roads or over a lot of bumps? The Classic does have a physical hard drive vs the other iPods which use flash drives. A bump can cause the Classic's drive to skip, making it crash.

no not really. roads are all smooth around here. plus it only crashes specifically when it is transferring the album art after a song starts.

i don't know why your iPod is crashing, but If you don't want to connect an iPhone, then just connect a USB stick. Much cheaper, and all the metadata and cover art works, at least with the music files from my iTunes library.

It takes about 5 or 10 seconds for the cover art to pop up, and until it does I can't skip to the next song. But there's no crash, or even pause in the song.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

I wanted to do that only to find about 2/3 of my music is not transferable. It appears apple was very strong on copy protection when iTunes first began. The only music I have been able to transfer to a USB is the music I have purchased in the last year and a half.

I think there are programs that will remove it, but I'm just not in the mood to screw with it now so I just use the iPhone through Bluetooth. The cover art definitely works with it.

Yeah same here. cover art usually pops up within the first 10 to 12 seconds (it got a little quicker when I went to small images) but it still randomly crashes during that time. Every 30 or 40 tracks or so...
