Oh yeah, when I meant string - something much more sturdy.

I don't think there's much road gunk in so cal, well at least not like Seattle where I just moved from so I think the paint will be fine as long as sand the surface up a little and prime it and etc. I'll show you my end result, I'm planning to use the cam hole cover cover and use that as my base. I'm actually very much looking forward to Saturday!!

Okay Mr. Pete, finished in about 3 hrs or so. It wasn't all that hard. All the panels came off without any broken tabs. Just have to use some force. I used the blank camera cover, didn't have to take it out at all.

This is what it looks like from behind. I used the mount that was provided by sony and screwed it in to the tab. Also used the round foamy thing to fill my hole so that it's fills the hole. Also I used a lot of plumber glue to fill the gaps so that it's sealed pretty good. See picture below.

Instead of weed wacker line, I used 14inch long zip tie, Lowes had a small bundle for $3.99. I cut the end so that it made a pointy tip and pulled it through with ease. I used some WD40 after I got it through and had the connector go through. It was pretty messy since I had one of those pointer WD40 tips. It went through super easy. BTW, WD40 on electrical tape is not good. Tape loses stickiness.

This is where I installed it using velcro. Its on pretty good.

I tapped it in to reverse. I thought about making it so that it'll be powered all the time, but just went with reverse in the end. I can always change it later. I can't wait to install in dash DVD so I can take advantage of this!!!

Also, I have the cover sanded with 180 grit sand paper and went to 320 grit. Primed it 3Xs and wet sanded with 1000 grit. It's ready for paint which should arrive this week. I'll add clear coat too. BTW, I only did this cause I already had the sand paper, primer and clear coat from my curb rash fix project. Will post once I get it painted.

Nice pix! Interesting that you popped the boot out of the upper/lower mounts. I just threaded with the boot in place.

How hard was it to get the boot reinstalled, and do you think it made the job easier to pop it out?

Yes I popped it out. I don't even want to think about trying that without having it out. It made it so that I can make it straight and not have to bend it through the boot and was able to get it through on my second try. Getting it back on wasn't hard at all. The top part was super easy and the bottom part was hard cause I had WD40 on my hand it made the rubber extra slippery.

Then that's a great hint for future installers: pop out the boot, thread the cable, reinsert boot.

I agree WD40 is hard on the sticky side of electrical tape. That's why I carefully assembled my taped feeder+cable assembly before using any WD40. If the tape is properly sealed, you can lubricate the assembly and it will hold together nicely (at least for a few hours if not longer.)

Now I just need to decide on a In Dash DVD player to complete the installation. BTW, where in CO are you at? Still have a house in the springs when I was there from 05 to 07.

There's no perfect in-dash unit. It all depends on which tradeoffs are ok for you...

Mr.pete, not sure if u still check this thread but I just installed my pioneer avh 8400bh today - yes it took me this long to decide! Anyways, on my last picture of the install I tapped my power to the reverse in the rear driverside area, do you know where I can find a constant in that area? I want to be able to power the rear view camera when I'm pulling up to the garage to make sure the car is past the garage door -- it's a small garage. I've scoured the forum and came up empty. Thanks in advance!

Just checking in for the first time in more than a year. If you are still interested, give a yell.

I wired mine all the way to the front of the car and installed a switch on the lower-left side of the dash, in with the other controls (like brightness control.) I am very glad to have that switch! I use it so much I'm wearing the first one out! It is fantastic for parking in garage, in various parking lot situations, and more.

In addition, the reverse auto-on doesn't seem to always work. But the switched-forced-on version is 100% reliable.
