Well, what I posted is a large shopping center and also there's an observation deck (http://www.prudentialcenter.com/shop/shop_detail.php?id=64) on top of a tall office building ([ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prudential_Tower"]Prudential Tower - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]). I visited the mall and the observation deck.

For people who come to shop or eat at the mall, if you drive, you will pay through the nose for parking, unless you get it validated. Even w/the validation, that's insane by my standards. In my part of the SF Bay Area, the thought of paying anything for parking at a shopping mall is silly.

You probably also noticed the event parking w/the Red Sox being a baseball team.

For those who work or live there and need to park there, clearly, the monthly option makes more sense.

That's why you park at Alewife Station and take the red line in.

Parking is $7/day, baby! I loved Alewife...

Here is my solution for the car park that was the subject of this post: Just don't allow cars of a certain size in. Make the park to fit only mid-sized sedans, and do not allow any trucks or SUVs on the lot due to their size. Problem solved.

When I was in Boston (was part of a trip to NYC and Philly), I had no car in any of those cities. I used public transit, my feet and Greyhound buses (to get between the major cities).

I did have to ask a Priuschatter to take me from La Guardia aiport in NY to my hotel in East Rutherford, NJ though...

[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas_Guzzler_Tax"]Gas Guzzler Tax - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

    Dang!
I just read through the Gas Guzzler Tax law. You would think that my beloved government would just say that "Vehicles that get less than ____ MPG", or even (if you wanted to be more "progressive") "Vehicles that get less than a certain percentage of the current CAFE standard shall be levied an additional tax of ____."

    NOOOooooo!
    Way too simple!

Here's part of the current Gas Guzzler Tax Law:

    Gas guzzler tax calculation
The adjusted fuel economy of a vehicle,[IMG], is calculated by combining the measured fuel economy of the car when driving in the city, [IMG], and the measured fuel economy of the car when driving on a highway, [IMG].
Taking the adjusted fuel economy, we can then find out how much penalty, [IMG], the manufacturer has to pay for that particular vehicle by using the following equation. [IMG] needs to be looked up on the table above[[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed"]citation needed[/ame]] and [IMG] is the numbers of cars that are found to be under the set Gas Guzzler standard,

You don't think its that simple do you? If its a light truck it doesn't get a guzzler tax, and SUVs are according to the government light trucks. Then if it is over 6000lbs and used partially for business you can right off up to $25,000.

Tax the oil, tax the vehicles not getting high enough fuel economy. Cafe taxes the manufacturers if they don't get good enough mileage for the fleet. The past rules made it better for the car maker to make light trucks - SUVs- than station wagons.

There you have it, the government incentives to make SUVs:D

Well, the tax write off is independent of the gas guzzler tax.

"Light trucks" (includes SUVs, pickups, minivans, and even some vehicles that look like cars: like most Subaru wagons, Chevy HHR, Chrysler PT Cruiser, etc.) and anything classified as a "truck" (even if beyond "light truck" in terms of GVWR (e.g. Hummer H2, Ford Excursion)) are all exempt from the gas guzzler tax.

The point was we really don't have the tax because the manufacturers do not produce any vehicles that fit into law's requirements. As mentioned earlier in the thread SUV's and light trucks do not fit into this category so if you so choose to buy a suburban as a company car you don't pay gas guzzler tax, and the government allows you to depreciate the entire vehicle the same year.

Here in Texas it seems that at least 7 out of every 10 vehicles on the road are trucks, vans, and SUV's. Of course this stat is only from my observation, but as a state we have the "bigger is better" attitude. Hell, I bought SUV's just so I could sit high enough to see more than the car immediately in front of me.

They do, but they sell in *TINY* numbers and are limited to a bunch of expensive anyway high performance sports cars, exotics and other very expensive luxury cars.

It's targeting the wrong set of vehicles instead of the real guzzlers that sell in significant numbers. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the government's got any motivation to change this. I'm sure the Big 3 would fight this big time if there were an effort.

Other companies sell plenty of vehicles that fall into this category. Toyota sells plenty of tundras, tacomas, siennas, 4 runners, fj cruisers, sequoias and land cruisers. They don't only sell the prius.

Sure but take a look at how many monstrosity class SUVs (e.g. Sequoia) Toyota sells vs. GM (e.g. Escalade, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban) . See URLs below.

Toyota | March 2012 Sales Chart
    http://media.gm.com/content/dam/Media/gmcom/investor/2012/0501Deliveries.pdf

I don't take a big issue w/medium sized and smaller SUVs so long as they need the space. I'd rather people buy minivans (again, if they need the space) than monstrosity class SUVs.

    Hi jabecker--

When you find out a solution to keep enormous vehicles (and in some cases, just plain piss-poor parking) out of compact/hybrid spots, let me know.

I'm going to start our own version of the "What should happen to people who park like this?" that's a VERY long running thread at Tivocommunity. :)

How about butyric acid at the base of the windshield. You know, where the cabin air intake is.

well it's pretty simple. you write them a ticket for illegal/poor parking. i don't think we need to condemn the vehicle because the owner doesn't know how to park.
