My Prius only plays songs in the .mp3 format
Will not play .wma or other

Just in case you have a combo of format types on a thumbdrive or other flash memeory device.

I believe that it will play other formats though when running thru a "player" into car stereo. just not in bulk on a memory stick.

I use thumb drives with WMA files as well as MP3s and they play just fine through the USB port.

    That's interesting.
I have 1200 songs or so on a thumbdrive, maybe 20 that are mp3.
Once installed the player loads, takes awhile, then plays the first mp3 it finds.
The wma files are seen but can't be chosen.
    It's a Corsair Flash Voyager, formnatted FAT32, 16GB, USB 3.0
Once one song plays it says "stopped" for a long time then plays another mp3.
I normally lose patience afet about 2 minutes so maybe it just takes a long time due to the size of t-drive.

First, my USB is also 16GB and is FAT32. My USB is organized into 55 folders, each folder contains a Broadway show of 20-30 tracks. Each entire folder (show) is entirely one format. Most are WMA, but 3 or 4 are MP3. When one folder is finished, it goes on to the next. I have not observed any problem going from one format folder to another (but I am not sure that I have ever had that transition).

Also, my Audio System is likely different than yours. Mine is a 2011 JBL with the DVD nav.

I should also note that my 2007 (with JBL system) would also play CDs with either MP3 or WMA tracks (the front of the unit has a MP3/WMA label.

Should be about the same as my songs will be in albums.
I'm doing some conversion to mp3 today and will try it tonite when the car gets back.
    I'm sure I'll find a working combo.
Would think that if it plays in an '07 it'll play in a '12.
Appreciate the help and will report back soon.

Used some conversion/DRM software on about 30 wma files. Converted to mp3. Thumbdrive in usb port in the mighty Prius, songs come up quite quickly with album pics and such.

Gonna try to convert a batch of about 500 at a time and see how it goes with 16GB stick full.

    Nice. Think it's settled.

tks dhancock for staying with it.

Look in the Audio/display manual. It states how and what types of music it plays, how the folders evolve and how many titles and folders it can handle.

I don't know about the 2012 manuals - but the 2011 manuals are pretty damn bad (plenty of words, little clarity).
