this thread just upsets me. it is the epitome of hybrid "smug" that makes people hate hybrids. the holier than thou attitude really needs to go. it's been played. are you buying a prius because you think it's the right thing to do, or because you want to condemn others?

what some of you are proposing is vehicle discrimination. "you can't park here, you're not a hybrid or a small car." sounds a lot like "you can't drink here, you're not a white person." it's simply an indirect way to discriminate against PEOPLE who happen to drive trucks, suvs, and jeeps. after all, i don't think the truck cares where it parks. it's the person that gets screwed.

This is a quote fom the article. " “A big SUV has a cost both in terms of the environment and in terms of being a heavier vehicle that causes more wear and tear on our lot,” he said. “We think that should be reflected in our price.”
If there is anything that refers to the drivers I haven't seen it. It seems to me that the business owners are trying to operate a profitable business and they are also making a stand for the environment. People have the option of parking at this lot or choosing another place to park.

I don't think it's anything like discrimination. You can't choose what race you are, what color skin you're born with. You sure as heck can choose what car you buy or how you drive or park. You can even choose to put stickers on your car like "f*** the Prius" or license plate frames that say "sucking up natural resources," all which I've seen. So for those choices, I don't pity them. They've made their bed and they will lay in it too. Tolerance is a 2-way street.

I completely agree with you. There should be NO special perks or bonuses for driving a hybrid or fuel efficient vehicle, other than the actual fuel savings. I completely disagree with the "gas guzzler" tax, special parking spots, and even HOV lane use. Eliminate all the loopholes and tricks, such as tax breaks and government rebates.

Instead, tax the he** out of fuel. Use that money to pay for transportation infrastructure (roads, bridges, ect.). Also, public transportation should be self sustaining, not funded through my license fees & fuel tax money. Don't rob Peter to pay Paul. And private parking lot owners: make larger parking spots for larger vehicles, and charge more for them. If you can get 100 small cars in the same area that you could get 75 large cars, then you do what makes the most business sense.

You're a smug little ### if you think that everyone should be driving what you are. If my neighbor wants to pay more to drive a big SUV, then let him. What business is it of mine? If my other neighbor wants to think of himself as saving the environment by driving a Leaf, Volt, or moped, then that's his business. I have no right to tell him that he can't, just as he has no right to determine what I do with my money.

Let the free market decide what people are driving, and how much they pay for parking, not government.

Don't kid yourself. It has NOTHING to do with the environment, and everything to do with profit.

Most people won't become environmentalists until it become profitable.
